There's a couple of villa's we've looked at that back right onto wee lakes ( and I mean they look like a few feet between the lake and the pool), I wondered if this made it a bit insecty- Anyone got any opions on being right beside water- both good or bad?

Hi, we are on a small lake and have no problems with insects. The pools screens keep out any insects. We love our lake view and its always so peaceful.

We back onto the lake- never had any insects at all around the water- I would say it was because the estate is kept to high standards and it was clean and clear as against stagnant.... Also, the landscapers do spray regularly- as they do with the lawns.
Really, you would think Florida being on swamp land would be full of insects, but spraying must help, as it isn't a problem.

Also, ours backs on to water, but I note your comment about the homes being a few feet from water. Our home looks very near on photos, but, as with any other home, you will find it is probably 20 feet away, on a slope.

Fors and againsts.

Fors - lots of them.. the privacy- no one backing onto your pool. The views - watching the sunrise with a coffee sat out on the deck remains my favourite time of the day. Seeing the wild life. There is always something to see- not just a fence, or the tv :)
I have seen a bald eagle swooping down and catching fish in its talons, we have a resident otter who I have watched playing in the early morning, there is always something of interest- Egrets, Cormorants, turtles [and the odd gator, which is usually swiftly removed]Cranes etc

Againsts, you get the men leaving you to sunbathe whilst they wield fishing rods........oh hang on, is that another plus :)

Hope this helps!

we have stayed at Terra Verde on several occassions and the house backs onto a lake we've never had any problems with insects, now and then there are lizards but i dont think thats nessacerily because of lakes etc... we love being so close as we love to watch the wildlife...

Sometimes the pictures make the distance from the pool to the lake look less than it is. Some of mine do that, mainly because the garden slopes down a bit at that point, but there is at least 15 feet between the end of the deck and the lake. I love that it slopes because I can swim and get a brilliant view of the wildlife on the water.

Quite a few of my guests sit at the lake edge and fish, then BBQ what they catch. [msnsmile2]

Mossies can sometimes be a problem wherever there is natural water in Florida, if you decide to fish in the very early morning or at dusk/nearly sundown, both times being their breakfast and dinner. If you do that then the best way to prevent any bites is to cover up with lightweight long trousers as well as long sleeves, making sure that your top has a collar to protect your neck. A sun hat helps too.

The fish will take your bait at all times of the day, so you don't have to get up early to enjoy fishing.

During the rest of the day it's fine. We've never been bitten then.[msnsmile2]

Our home was backed and fronted by two lakes and we never had a problem with insects.

The County has to spray for insects regularly when homes are near lakes and so there are probably less insects around lake homes than there are around non-lake homes which aren't sprayed by the County.

As a secondary protection, you'll have the pool net screen anyway and look at the privacy and wildlife interests you get!

Thanks for all your replies - as always really helpful. We really like the look of Terre Verde in particualr, we passed it a lot when we stayed at Cresent Lakes last year and it looked lovely.

I have NEVER been anywhere in central Florida where after dusk there isn't an 'insect problem' near water. Why are there pool screens otherwise?

It is not a serious problem, but as stated above precautions need to be taken.

Pool screens keep out other critters also and act as the required safety fence around a pool. I know you don't have a private pool (nor presumably a home with a lake?) so there'd be no reason for you to know about either.

If people want to take biting precautions for other reasons than staying in a home on a lake, like staying in a home NOT on a lake, then that could be a wise move on their part.

one of my girls was bitten to pieces by mozzies but she got them away from the place we were staying... possibly when we they were out shopping as thats when she saw them all, and felt them...

I have stayed at properties near lakes and haven't found mozzies to be a real problem, however Florida is a subtropical state and despite the local authorities doing their bit by spraying these critters they don't kill them all. My wife is often bitten just walking from the car to the front door.

When we rent villas we prefer water views because they are so peaceful and relaxing. We have rented many homes and never had any problems with bugs. the screen Lanai s keep them out. It is so much more private, better then looking back into a neighboring pool.

Our villa nestles right at the foot of Lake Thomas, a warm springs natural lake. During visits we regularly tidy up our 450 ft of lake frontage. I can honestly say we have experienced more bites at home in the UK than when working around our lake. Obviously sensible precautions are a good idea, but unless you are visiting a swamp area the risk of mosquito bites is no greater by the lake than anywhere else in my opinion.

The benefits of visiting a lakeside home are immense, especially if you are interested in the lake's resident wildlife. Each visit we come across something new and exciting, this year we learnt from our neighbours that an American Eagle had built its nest in the conservation area to the right of our home, luckily my son caught site of it just before we came back to the UK. My favourite place to be is sitting at our dining room table looking out over the lake and its constantly changing appearance, it is just so peaceful and relaxing and never a dull moment.

Staying at a lakeside villa means you can enjoy the best of both worlds, with our home you are close enough to easily experience all the fun of the theme parks, and when you have had enough you can relax at home and enjoy Florida's wildlife, flora, and fauna - pure bliss! :)

Bird noise is the only problem I've had..I can't stay in my friends pool area because of it..bugs are everywhere near or far from water..always use spray..can't say I've been bite within a screen..

We have always stayed at a villa which backs onto a lake. The lovely views, the peace and quiet, the wildlife and listening to the occasional bird calling. Brilliant especially early in the morning sitting by the pool with a nice cup of tea - it seems to relax you ready for the park adventues. Last time we went we had turtles coming up to us as we threw bread in, my kids loved it.
