I'm not sure where in Germany you're headed for, but here in Munich we had about 6 or 7 inches of snow overnight, and it's been snowing steadily all day. Mind you they are well prepared for it here so it's not causing any real problems.

What's happened John? You usually seem to get better weather in Shropshire.

Having moved from Wiltshire where we could not get off the drive anytime there was a couple of inches of snow we are pleased to say no snow in Bournemouth yet. It is down to 1C but bright and sunny.

Non-stop snow for 5 days here in the North-East (Middlesbrough)! We've shoveled the drive 3 times this weekend to get the car out and each time the snow starts again. [msneek][msneek]

Very picturesque though, here's a photo of our garden. Almost 18 inches now, as you can see by the snow on top of the garden table.

We've had about 4 inches overnight here in Kent and as usual immediately the chaose begins. Daughters traind which should get into London Bridge at 7.20 had still not arrived at 8.30 and they stilll had to fix a failed train before they could go. She still has another train to get when it gets there and is normally at work in Holborn by 8 oclock. so is going to be at least 2 hours late. Looks like our day trip to France on Saturday might be off if it stays like this. We're supposed to be at Dover at 7.15, as it's just a day out there isn't much point making too much hard work of it.

It's so frustrating how at the first sign everything collapses. it took my daughter 3.5 hours for the 1.5 hour commute on the train. If we get 3 months of uncertain weather and unreliable trains, the patience of all employers will start to wear a bit thin.

Mind you my daughter did persuade me to put the christmas tree and decorations up at the weekend so it does look more festive with snow falling outside.

Its madness!
Got called out last night, with about an inch of snow on the road.
An artic lorry had jack knifed on the M25 (still lorries stuck there
this morning), so turned off north at junction 7 onto M23 which also came to a grinding halt (still 1 inch of snow).
One little question ... WHY ?
Could understand if it was today as its now 5 inches deep, plus its
my 2 days off, on my shift!!
But must'nt grumble!

We were supposed to be test driving 3 cars today: the Toyota garage still went ahead and we drove the car at 9.30 this morning and it did handle well considering our council is making sure it has enough grit to last the winter by not using any of it so the roads are in a bad way[msnmad]. The Ford garage the salesman was happy to go ahead but he said his manager had called off test drives (this was for the afternoon so conditions might have improved) as he deemed it too dangerous however, the salesman thought he was more worried about getting the cars hit and the Volkswagon garage has not rung back to arrange a time. It does make you wonder how reliable some garages really think their cars are in all conditions!

We did have more snow overnight and it is yet to stop today.

Spoke to Robert yesterday evening as I had heard it was bad in Sheffield and he said round the corner from him someone has built an igloo on the pavement which is causing some amusement.

Life nearly at a standstill in north east (nr Middlesbrough). Schools, colleges closed (why is it teachers can't get to work??). Airport closed, roads gritted but making little difference. Sun is out at the moment so it is very pretty but soooo cold. It has been a week now. Will have to venture out for provisions today.
Still get a chance to put on a film, get a bottle out and wrap presents later.

We last had snow on Saturday afternoon so expected this morning for the roads to have been dealt with and hopefully the pavements but took our car out this morning to go to the station and it was -9C. The roads have still not been gritted nor have the pavements. Guess the roads budget will not have to cover the cost of broken bones from those walking and falling on the ice so they are not worried. Andrew's girlfriend is flying in from Moscow (hopefully) on Thursday and out there they are falling about laughing about how we have ground to a halt again over such a small amount of snow.

Just hoping and praying they get Heathrow running soon. My family are back in the UK already, but I am flying home via Hong Kong on Wednesday night (due to land on Thursday morning) hope it will all go OK.

Most of my colleagues who left at the weekend have either been stranded in Dublin for a few days or had to get the train down from Scotland. I am sure they will have it all under control by Thursday. although the flight is due to land first thing in the morning (5.00am) so I am bit concerned [msnsad]

That's good to know pam, my uncle has to travel down from Thetford to Gosport on Wednesday and I didn't know what the situation was like up there.

Our snow has all gone now, we have had heavy rain since 11 am this morning [xmas1]

A work colleague of mine who will also be in the UK over Christmas)called Alamo today to ask about the possibility of winter tyres on the car he will be renting. They didn't have a clue what he was talking about. I am amazed how backwards the UK is in this respect - winter tyres are hugely beneficial in temps lower than 7c, not just in snow and ice.

Here in Bavaria it has always been recommended to use winter tyres, and almost everyone has both summer and winter tryes for their vehicle. This year it is finally compulsory, under pain of on-the-spot fine and points on your licence.

We will be driving to UK on Wednesday, so it'll be interesting to compare how Germany, France and UK are faring.

Its not a case of being backward Keith, just that most people are too tight to buy tyres full stop let alone buying a second set for the winter. My Merc gets around just fine on its winter tyres :)

We are down in Worthing in Sussex and it's pouring with rain. Picking my 92 year old mother up on Wednesday and will be driving up to Scarborough in North Yorkshire for Christmas. Not looking forward to the journey!

I meant backwards as in the government making it compulsory, or recommended, or at least educating people as to the benefits. Most people in the UK don't even know what winter tyres are, let alone what they are for. Those that do (like yourself) already know :-)

We don't use winter tires ...and can't say in 11 years of ice and snow we have needed them..

Yes Leicester is covered in snow today, been watching the cars trying to get out of our close and skidding all over the road David managed to get out but rang us when he got to work and said 'stay where you are, the roads are bad' roll on February.
