View Full Version : Driving License expiry.
Hi All,
I am off to Florida in April (cant wait!!) but just noticed that my driving license expires 3 days after I return to the UK. Are there any rules about the driving license needing to be valid for at least 6 months as with the passport? I don’t want to risk renewing it so near to going away in case it does not come back so hoping it will be ok.
I didn't realise driving licences expired ! Do they send you a new one automatically or do you have to reapply ? The weather is lovely in Gosport at the moment Graeme isn't it ! I am in Elson, where are you ??
In Fact I think its the Photo that expires and you have to renew it every 10 years, so the actual license will still be valid. I am just worried as it has a date on the photo card etc of when it expires. I am hoping that it will be valid as don't want to change it before I go. I am in Elson as well - how funny!!
Andrew had to renew his last year but the DVLA sent the reminder out well in advance - at the moment it costs £20 to renew a photo driving licence - so it might be you could renew it before you go. His was returned quite quickly.

It also took about two weeks for mine to come back BUT I did not receive a reminder and ended up sending off the renewal 2 months after the photocard expired! lucky i noticed at all really!
So everyone should check to make sure that the photocard part is still valid. My wife just passed her driving test and her photocard is only valid for five years, I guess at £20 a renewal its a good money making scheme for the government!

My photo was due in November but as I was coming to Florida last week for 10 weeks, I got the forms from the PO and sent the DL off to DVLA. I got it back the same day as I had a reminder letter from DVLA, so it won't harm you to get it done in advance and then it's out of the way and you will not have too worry when you get back from holiday.

Ouch thought it was 10 years - well this is one way to help clear the budget deficit more quickly

Yes it used to be 10 years but i guess they figured that reducing it to 5 years would be a good way of netting the gov more of our money!

I think successive governments have been squeezing in these rises in fees, I have kept to the old licence. Kids used to be on passports also and they have their own now too

I've still got my old licence and after reading this thread I shall make sure I keep it as long as possible.
