I am flying to Orlando via Atlanta at the end of March.
what happens with customs, do we go thro' customs when we land at Atlanta, or when we get to Orlando?
I thought I read somewhere that doing the indirect route saves time in Florida, presumably because you already have customs clearance.
Thoughts?

When you land at Atlanta you will go through immigration, pick up your luggage and take it over to the onward check in (just drop off onto the conveyor belt) then you go through customs and proceed to your departure gate.
You'll probably have 2 hours in between flights to do all this but don't dilly-dally as you could end up in a long queue at immigration and end up missing your connecting flight ( I did first time at Atlanta)[msnwink]
When you get to Orlando all you'll have to do is pick up your luggage.

So we have to sort our luggage out then, it doesnt get transferred to the Orlando flight automatically?

You will need to pick luggage up, then clear customs with it in your possession before you give it back to airline for your connecting domestic flight.
We went this route 2 weeks ago.
You will now go through a security check after giving over your bags for the connecting flight.

On the return trip your bags are booked straight through to UK.

Thanks everyone, loads of helpful info there, at least we know what to expect now

Remember on second security it will be coat off, shoes off, belts off, liquids separate - just as you did when you left UK

The bgas will get tagged all the way through in the UK, but you have to collect them. You will clear customs in Atlanta, so save time when you land in Orlando. Not a bad thing as Orlando can get busy.
