I rented a med SUV from Dollar, I went to Dollar as we were assured by UScarhire that taking the “gold” insurance would mean that I would not have to present a credit card. I also checked with Dollar direct and eventually got an email assuring me that the package would cover everything but the $12.50 CFC (which is really $13 something including tax) at MCO and I could pay cash. Well despite all this the clerk just kept referring to the contract saying that a swipe is necessary but nothing would be taken. I was going no where and was not going to get a car so I relented and handed over a card. She did show me the screen with it registered and zero charge. She also did not charge the CFC as she said it was covered so I didn’t argue.

We got a Jeep Patriot which was tight for luggage, had to take one bag inside, but for a journey to and from the airport it would be good for the rest of the time, no big deal. A warning light came on, on the dash and I took it back on day 2 and was exchanged for a bigger Jeep Renegade, I thought it was great but got complaint from “the wife” about having to climb in and out. No questions asked about the warning light, never even came to look at it just checked the system for an exchange and away we went.
Would I go to Dollar again, I was happy with the car, I was happy with the after care customer service, but paying for a more expensive rental to negate a CC as I thought well I’d rather go to Alamo and get a choice of any vehicle from the lot.

I'm pleased everything worked out OK despite the card swipe issue. The only thing that does concern me a bit is that for the last several months (well before you booked) we have not advised anyone that Dollar do not require a card swipe.

Several months ago Dollar changed their policy, and although most often they do not take a card swipe, we always advise customers that a swipe may be taken, so we can not make a guarantee of this.

I've checked back through all our email correspondance and can not see any discussion with you on the question of this, although I wonder if perhaps you have been reading some old forum posts from last year before Dollar statrted to change their policy.

Either way, I'm sorry for any confusion and glad it didn't cause a problem.

Roger,
I've just sent you an email with our conversation regarding this. Granted it was January when I was planning a rental and as you will see from the attachment I thought I had direct confirmation in August from DTAG (Dollar).

However as you say everything worked out and I did like the Jeep. But I did go for the higher rate supplier as I thought that the extra was going to take care of any issues on collection. As this is no longer the case I will be able to select a more economic option in the future. On previous experience I would be drawn to Alamo for the ability to pick the car from those available in the parking lot.

Thanks for that, I hadn't looked so far back.

It was only just after that when Dollar changed their policy. Dollar are a bit of a pain because depending on who you ask at Dollar they may say they do or no not require a card swipe, then it really seems to depend on the person on the desk. Up until then it was strict policy for Dollar not to take a card swipe at all from MCO on the Gold option.
