We traveled to Tenerife today with BMI and the crew told us that as from October Luthansa has taken them over with no job losses .
2 of the crew had been made reduntant by Ba ealier this year and that Ba has now stopped flying from from Manchester to the Caribean ie: Jamaica ,St Lusia also Canada .

It's very uncertain for the airlines, especially with such high APD duties, I am sure if the government reduced them substantially you would certainly see more passengers.

Phil I am sure the crew new what was going on and they were thrilled that Bmi took them on board after working for Ba a long time and having to strike everytime they were being funny with them and the working relationships were not very good ie ; look what they did to Richard Branson and Freddy laker .
This story came from the horses mounth .

I assume you meant October last year? Lufthansa already owns BMI...they bought 50% in Oct 2008 (deal due to complete Jan 2009) to add to the 30% they already owned from 1999. They were also considering purchasing the remaining 20% from SAS.
However according to recent reports LH is already considering selling BMI, and one of the potential purchasers is BA [msnoo]

The main value of BMI lies in the landing slots it has at LHR, (currently standing at 11% of available slots) so I very much doubt if anyone would take on BMI without job losses

Just to add that BA haven't had crew based in Manchester for over 2 years now, and any job losses by BA to crew have all been by VOLUNTARY means, they have not made any crew compulsory redundant.

The guys on board BMI must have been telling porkys then as they were on board BA from Manchester for years and glad they had got jobs again .
There is aways life after the company you left and jobs to be had if you are willing to search as we have had experence of this .
Delta once said that at Manchester Ba came first to be repaired and then the rest followed one.
That is why some companys had long delay this is true it came from a good source .

But after florida we loved Bali and really enjoyed Canada. My wife though prefers renting a villa on a hillside in spain - me, I find it boring but I have to let her win sometimes! [msnwink]

In the world of Redundancy there's voluntary and there's "voluntary".[msnwink]
When BA sold of almost all of their UK domestic routes a couple of years ago, they and the eventual buyers treated the staff very poorly. I recall that they promised all their Bristol based staff that Flybe would take them all on, which they did. However, virtually the next day, Flybe dropped the service and put all the staff out of work.
Just yesterday, BA wrote to all their casual staff telling them they wouldn't get any more work from October and there was nothing voluntary about that decsion..
BA have been treating their staff badly for years. My sister worked for them for 25 years in the Travel Shops. Then they made the travel shops a separate entity and when they recruited new staff they paid them less than the original BA staff. Then they told the remainder of the old BA staff that they two options, accept a huge cut in salary and loss of travel benefits or take 'voluntary redundancy' by the end of the year. My sister opted for the redundancy as that meant she a) got a payoff and b) after two years when she reached the official BA retiral age she got her BA pension plus her travel concessions reinstated a BA pensioner. She was so mad that as the final date for acceptance we 31 December that year and that happened to be a working day, she waited until 4.30pm that day to hand in her notice, she said, why should she treat them any better than they were treating the few original BA staff, they were none too pleased and kept asking her if she had make up her mind what she was going to do. She was lucky as she got a great job with another travel company who had been asking her to work for them for years, but she had stayed loyal to BA, which shows why BA are in the state they are in today - the staff have been treated so badly that they have lost their loyalty and pride in the company.
