Hi there does anyone know where i can get a sat nav for Florida we have our car hire through with Avis or how much this would be to rent one with them...thanks Laura

We found one big advantage of booking through http://www.uscarhire.co.uk/sat-nav.aspx was when the unit arrived, before we left for the airport, our final destination was already keyed in. This meant when we collected the car we were ready to go straight away and did not have to worry about programming it. (At the time we did not have a car with sat nav so it would have taken us time to work it out).

As the question was sat nav through Avis the answer is that you can hire a sat nav through Avis.

We also hire Avis cars and book online, there is an option to add sat nav on their booking site, I think they offer Germin units at about $11 per day ... but that is from memory, so I could be wrong ... and always am according to my wife !!!![msnwink]

Yes you can get them from Avis but as you mention they are expensive. With ours you have the unit before you go so can have play and get used it. Plus we program then unit for you with your villa or hotel address. You do not have to rent a car from us to have a sat nav.

When we were over in 2008, the first thing we did after leaving the airport was go to Wal-Mart and buy a basic Tom Tom One. It cost about $150 at the time and we have used it for that trip and the 2 trips since. If it is $11 per day to rent one, you will be quids in to buy and of course you get to keep it and re-use it when you are done.

In August this year, I saw a Tom Tom in Best Buy for $121, so even better value now.

I find that renting from the rental company works best if you only need the unit for a few days of your trip. For me, it's an expensive option to be forced to rent for the entire period of my holiday if I only need it on the odd day when I'm outside my area of familiarity.

[/quote]We always like to do something new each time out (it helped us get to space view park in titusville this last time [msnsmile2] for the Discovery launch), and I tend to use it by default - (ok I have a poor sense of direction and my wife can't read maps!!), So for us buying was perfect even for a single trip even if we'd decided to use it as a paper weight afterwards. What I do for added value is load it with my UK maps and use it at home too. As you say, it all depends how many days you have to rent for as a minimum and how much you need it to get around. I do have a GPS dependency though![msneek]

So if you've rented a sat nav from a car rental company, you missed a trick.

Plus the http://www.uscarhire.co.uk/sat-nav.aspx one is ready programmed for your journey from the airport to your accommodation so very reassuring if it's your first visit or you've not stayed in a particular place before and you've perhaps arrived in the dark amd you'll be tired after a long flight. You can relax and just follow the instructions.

The http://www.uscarhire.co.uk/sat-nav.aspx is also pre-programmed with most of the places you're likely to want to visit during your stay, which a purchase after arrival one obviously isn't. But if you want to spend your precious holiday time doing this...

But if you want to spend your precious holiday time doing this...[/quote]I think the point is that it isn't possible to rent in the way you obviously prefer for anything less than the full period of the holiday. If I only want to have Sat Nav for a couple of days, that works out very expensive. Certainly, it's a good rate if you're going to use it every day though.

It also seems that you haven't rented at the car desk yourself or you would be aware that it is is very common for them to enter your accommodation address for you anyway so that service isn't by any means unique. I've never been refused on that and most of the time I haven't needed to ask, they ask me.

I use US Car Hire as often as most on here and am very happy with it but whether the Sat Nav works for you is down to individual circumstances.

And a http://www.uscarhire.co.uk/sat-nav.aspx sat nav does come pre-programmed exactly as I described. What I did forget to say is that the price includes postage within the UK.
