View Full Version : Gold Option, worth it???
Hi Guy's
I'm about to book, 3 different cars for our holiday next month.
Mainly because we want to book a convertible of our middle week, no good for the other weeks as we'll have to much luggage to and from the airport.
As we are booking 3 separate weeks with only myself driving, is it worth paying the extra for the Gold option.
Any info much appreciated.
David.

The Gold option works out better if you are having the car for a shorter duration so could well work out best. If you have the same car for 3 weeks the additonal price over the silve rworks out more than the tank of petrol.
Look at each one individually, and see the difference in price if it is less than you will be charged for a tank of petrol (normally a higer price than at pumps) Gold will work out better.

Currently, the Gold option usually works out cheaper if you have more than 2 drivers but Silver will almost always be better value if, like with you, there isn't. The difference between the 2 is more than a tank of fuel even on just a 1 week rental so I'd go for Silver in your circumstances.

I did a one day gold with Dollar and it was only £5 more than silver. I didn't use the whole tank, but figured the lack of hassle and the saving from a local charge for fuel would actually save me money.

You will benefit more with Gold by your intention to take 3 individual rentals rather than a single 3 week arrangement because you pay the premium over Silver for each week but, in your case, will get 3 'free' tanks instead of 1. Longer rentals are pretty poor value with the Gold option unless you have more than 2 drivers.
When "gas' was a round $4 a gallon, Gold was probably the better option but, at current prices, Silver will usually save you money. (Watch out for the different approaches the rental firms take on bringing the car back with a full tank).
