Just looking at the tickets for Universal/IOA (purchased through this site)and they state that Photo ID is required. Since the only ID will be our passports I wanted to check to see if this was an absolute must.Would seem totally inpractical to have ouir passorts on wet rides etc. I am not going to trust lockers either.

Any suggestions or views?
Nigel

We've been in Universal hundreds of times and never once been asked for photo ID. You'll be fine without it.

Please DON'T rely on photo ID not being required, they sometimes ask for it.
Just carry a photocopy of your passports' photopage with you.
Also covers all the other occasions when you might need ID...
Would suggest that you don't carry passports with you, leave then safely locked in your villa !!!

Is a photocopy of your passport enough for shops / parks / ID?

We use our driving licences and they can go wherever you carry your cc

It is a legal requirement in USA that you carry some form of photo id with you at all times, not just in the parks.

I was asked for id once entering universal studios as i had a print at home ticket.I found coin bags from the bank are the perfect size for passports to keep them dry [msnwink]

Doubt you'd need photo ID for your children if you carry yours...
Those of us of uncertain age (ahem) haven't got photo driving licences,
we've got REAL ones made of genuine paper !!!!

Is this true? Or just an assumption, based on...?

There are obviously many activities that require you to provide photo ID if requested (eg purchase alcohol), but I'm not sure it's a requirement to carry photo ID at all times, regardless of what you're doing.

As far as I am aware, there is no legal requirement to carry photo ID UNLESS you are in control of a motor vehicle - then it's compulsory.
However, you may be asked for ID when paying by CC, entering parks with E-tickets or trying to buy anything age related (booze, for instance).
Just easiest to carry something & reduce the hastle....

I've been asked for phot ID in Walmart whenusing my credit card. Only had my driving licence (no photo as I'm old and havent had any points added in recent years), staff could not believe that the driving licence didn't have a picture.

I'm not even sure that's true. I was doing a bit of research and there are lots of objections to the REAL ID Act going through the courts based on religious grounds, and many states have exemptions for various reasons. And as was pointed out by christhear, some non-US driving licences don't have photos on them either.

That for sure is true :D

I was just curious if (as suggested by SDJ) that there really is a legal requirement to carry photo ID at all times when in the US - I don't believe there is.

Only for US citizens. There is legal requirement to your driving license if you are driving though.

As I said, having done a bit of research around this, it appears many states have situations in which they issue driving licences without picture, and many US citizens don't have a passport, so I find it strange that they would require a photo ID to be carried at all times. Although there are moves afoot to introduce photo ID nationwide (in common with many countries these days) there seem to be many objections from religious groups, and even many states have filed objections against the REAL ID Act.

I am with the OP, as I never carry my passport when I'm out and about in any country (not just US), and rarely carry my driving licence. I have never yet had a problem (I am tempting fate by saying that, of course!)

I should have said Florida state requires photo ID for residents in vehicles. You really should carry your DL, if you have an bump or get pulled for speeding and you have not got the required documents, I would be very surprised if they did not cart you off until it is shown.
I was pulled for speeding once and only had my UK license on me, as I was clearly a resident (truck full of MC stuff, they wanted to take me in. Luckily they did allow my wife to bring out my Florida license as my home was close by. One thing that really gets a state trooper is playing ignorance of state rules and regs. You might get away with a sheriff but not state troopers. They can take no messing around at all.

We're just back from our trip and were asked for photo ID several times at parks entrance (Seaworld and Universal parks both), when the fingerprint check wouldn't work. We were asked for the kids' ID when it happened to them too. So you do need a photo ID, but I'm sure it can be your driver's licence.
We left our stuff (passports included) in a locker at different occasions and never felt it was unsafe: there's always someone there to help people out anyway, keeping an eye on things (fingerprints technology again: works well, when it does work [msnwink]).
