We run it from here but have a UK Proxy IP address, so can watch BBC and ITV. It costs a few £'s per month with no contract, but only useful if you are taking your own laptop with you (as it needs configration on your own machine).

Who do you use Roger? I am just about to set one up, but want to be sure that they are UK based

Thanks Roger, this was the one I was looking at, but it is good to know that it is working for someone else. Is there any real difference between their 2 services, i.e. unique proxy or shared proxy?

Sorry, so many questions.

They both seem to work well. The downside is that with the shared, if someone else does something silly and gets the IP address banned then you have no service until a new IP address is issued and you update your config. I use the unique proxy to avoid this possibility.

Thanks again Roger, I think I'll go for the unique one as well..... hope it works ok with the Great Firewall of China!!

All set up and working a treat, well, working on and off to be honest because of the unstable internet access and the Great Firewall of China. [msnwink] Still my wife is happy as she can at least down load Eastenders when we move there next week.

Thanks for your advice Roger

Glad it's working. You can also watch ITV online if you want to, but you will need to uninstall Microsoft Silverlight.

If you have Silverlight installed then it will try to use the Silverlight player and this will result in a constant loop through adverts.

If you uninstall Silverlight then it will default to the Flash Player which works nicely (the downside of course being if you have anything else that you use that wants Silverlight).

We use this proxy service too and it's worked great for us on our overseas trips this year. We've also set it up so a friend from the US can watch our TV. They're watching some Wimbledon matches without the ads [msnsmile]

I've been using Hide My IP Address, maybe worth a look? It works from my USB pen drive so I can use it anywhere, and I can get an IP from many countries![msnwink]

Is the Hide my IP Address software any good? Its a lot cheaper option than paying a monthly fee!

I've not used it for the BBC player but have no reason to beleieve it wouldn't work when you pick a UK IP[msncool]. I use it to purchase products at $ prices[msnwink] (US IP Address) rather than being re-directed to a EU based portal that charges more[msnsad]. Also when I'm traveling I can get a UK IP and get to UK based content[msnsmile2]. I believe there is a trial option so possibly worth a try? I liked the one time purchase so it suits me

Is there a way we can view the iplayer and any of the other steaming views via our TV? Sometimes we forget to record something and this would be so much better when we all want to see a programme

As far as I'm aware, the BBC iPlayer and other streaming apps are all Windows, Mac or Linux based. In which case you'll need a Home Theatre PC (HTPC) with a video card providing an output to match your TV input (s-video, DVI, HDMI). Many laptops now provide DVI/HDMI outputs so perhaps this would be an option?

There are some standalone streaming appliances, but I doubt they could run iPlayer.

Also, if you have a Wii then there is a version of the iPlayer for this.

We have the laptop connected to the TV and the quality is better than standard definition, but not quite as good as High-Def.

Thanks Keith & Roger. We do have a Wii connected to our main PC and did wonder if this would be an option. I did set it up to connect wirelessly to our router, what else would we need to do to connect?
