What sort of day out are you looking for?

Personal view but I think the walking around bit will be much better in Sarasota while the beach experience won't be that different. Sarasota's also the more 'upscale' location

There is a place on Treasure Island you can park up for free and go on the beach for a walk it is opposite to the new Publics at Treasure Island you can walk either way to your right to Johns Pass or to the left and as far as St Petes beach .

A visit to Treasure Island would be good. You could walk around John's Pass vilage and then walk across the road to a lovely beach and see your first Florida sunset. You will not forget it! Just do a search for John's Pass and Treasure Island to get directions. It's south of Clearwater, but not too far. We always visit John's Pass. There are good shops, boat trips, great restaurants to suit all tastes and you can usually see dolphins in the beautiful bay area. I'm sure you will love it! Have a great time.

Treasure Island is just after MADERIA BEACH and before St PETES beach driving from Clearwater .
It is a place you will love and want to visit again and again .

Booked a villa and car etc from here but looking at spending 1 night at Madeira Beach/Treasure Island-There are 3 adults and 3 children-nuances mean that we need 2 hotel bedrooms or 3 bedrooms in a condo-anybody got any suggestions for places to stay?

Bob there is a resturant at TREASURE ISLAND called The Middle Ground Grill it is a very good meal and the steaks are good .
It is opposite the beach not a big car park but well worth trying .

Longboat Key Sarasota is an amazing place never been to Clearwater but being on the gulf coast would expect it to be just as good.

I'd say Lido Cay just off DT Sarasota. Beach, shopping and restaurants.

Clearwater Beach is very relaxing and you can walk along the beach for miles. There are the usual souvenier shops and plenty of eating places, plus many boat trips including the Seascreamer and the Pirate Boat which go looking for dolphins which are often to be seen just from the beach.

Sarasota is also lovely and as mentioned more upmarket with expensive shopping and plenty of restaurants. Depends what you are looking for.

If you decided on going to the beach at Sarosota.
You could stop off at Ellenton shopping outlets on your way back. Some nice surroundings and bargins to be got.

we're looking forward to going to clearwater next trip its beautiful, last time we went for a boat trip and watched the dolphins in the wild...... very moving! next time we will do it better..... take lunch, we bought burger and chips at pier 69 and cost £50 for just 4 of us..... we thought that was dear in comparison to other meals we had..... very tiny portions we thought...... next time we will sort the trip for the dolphins/speedboat then spend the afternoon evening on the beach, the water was just so lovely and warm..... so inviting!!!!

would love to see pictures from others if anyone has any?

My recommendation would be Siesta Key beach, a snack for lunch just off the beach then shopping / wandering at St Armands Circle. After that, back to the beach for the sunset!! Well worth the drive down.

Siesta Key Beach and St. Armands Circle are several miles apart. The beach nearest to St. Armands Circle is Lido Beach.

We went to Treasure Island for the day a couple of weeks ago. It was lovely, spent time on the beach, the sea was so warm. We then drove along Gulf Boulavard to Clearwater and went on the Sea Screamer. Saw loads of dolphins that were jumping out of the water next to the boat and behind us. Had a fantastic day and can't wait to go back.

We left Orlando early morning and stopped at IHOP for breakfast. We did go into a place for a drink in Clearwater and they made us very welcome and chatted asway to us about what we have been doing etc.

I have been to both these areas in the past.

I feel that the barrier island beaches off sarasota are nicer than the Clearwater area which feel more built up and busy to me. But that may be what some prefer.
