Hi,
Planning or first family vacation to Orlando area this Feb - any thoughts on renting in a gated vs. non gated community? Any input is appreciated.

Gated not needed...if it were I would recommend going somewhere else for your holiday...
You cut out too many great villa's if you just go for gated...just my 2 cents...

Never figured out what the fuss about gated communities was all about myself. They do tend to have a central club house however and facilities will vary from community to community. If it's a concern over safety and security you will have no concerns - the Orlando area is very safe.

THe difference between gated and non gated is not really security. Gated communities are not looked after by the county. They are private -even replacing their own roads if necessary - so they are USUALLY [or mainly] kept to a good standard.
THe gates are an added extra, but any community in the short term rental area is fine. I wouldn't bother about anything but finding the home that suits your needs, and ensure it is near to the parks or golf courses you wish to visit.

Stayed in Gated Community and Non Gated and no difference. Wouldn't come into our thinking when booking a Florida Vacation.

We've just booked and only afterwards did we realise we had booked a 'gated' community. Makes no odds to us security wise or whatever, Orlando (parts of) no doubts has it's 'issues' but (at the risk of tempting fate) our last 4 visits have been problem free.

Again not wishing that anybody gets complacent but the last time we went we got totally lost on our way back from one of the parks - about 12 midnight we drew up in desperation in a car park next to a small shopping mall.... next to us was a dark very big pick up with two equally huge Mr. T types in both seats. Well I thought it's all or nothing an stepped out to ask directions and met two of the friendliest and most helpful guys you could ever meet....
possibly I was lucky but I was back to our hotel in 15 mins on the strength of their directions..

Chill out and enjoy wherever you are staying....

I would say that it does not really matter if it is gated or not. security on communities is pretty much the same where ever you go in Florida.

Both my homes are on gated communities. I chose the houses because of the floorplan, fixture, fitting, location and price. Not because there on a gated community.Having said that I do like the concept of a gated community. When I tap in my access code and the gates open it's does make me feel special.
But under no circumstances would a choose a home to rent just because it was located on a gated community.[msnsmile2]

Nearly done both in my time so who knows....lol
My friends live in gated ... they have to because the area in Canada of all places.. where they live is not that nice...we were also advised to have gated when we looked in the same general area....I'd never seen gated before...and it just reminds me of living in a place that is not that nice...and FL for the most part feels safe...I don't really want a daily reminder that in some places people need gated...:(
