Still a great rate compared with earlier in the year, I would have been thrilled with anything near 1.60 in Feb

That's very kind of you.

Katy's my 7 year old granddaughter (obviously!) but I also have 2 grandsons. We took them all to Florida a couple of years ago and they loved it. The dollar rate would have to go to about $4/£1 for me to afford to do that again.[msnsad]

I for one would never have expected such a strong recovery after such a dismal start to the year.

:D:D

Very flattering ([msnwink]) but I'm afraid I really don't have any more knowledge in this area than anybody else. I do follow currencies and make occasional spread bets as a hobby but I'd hate for anybody on here to make decisions with their money based on my thoughts. We haven't even reached the end of this week yet so my fun prediction could all too easily prove to be wrong. Let's face it, we all have a 50% chance of being right when we predict a rise or fall. My own strategy is to buy or sell when I'm happy with a particular level but I by no means get that right every time.

The Pound is certainly higher than it was earlier in the year but much lower than it was 12 months ago. I didn't see either of those moves coming!

Absolutely right. The Dollar has taken a bigger hit than the Euro over more or less any period you choose for the last year or so.

I never quite understand why people claim that a poor Euro exchange rate is a reason to go to the USA. For sure, there are many very good reasons to holiday in Florida but comparative exchange rates over the past 12 months really isn't one of them.

Anyway, the good news is that we're back at $1.66 this evening.[msnsmile]

I have changed curreny twice this year by pre-ordering on CCE, both times have been lucky as I have hit the top two rates that I have seen this year. If you track the exchange rates and have been following this thread, I think you just get a feel for 'when it is right' to change currency, but then again it could be just luck (and I am not at all lucky).

An interesting discussion on currency rates on the radio early this morning.

A currency trader offered the view that the 20% rise from a low of £1 = $1.34 at the beginning of this year, to the current $1.61 could not be supported by the economic outlook for the UK economy and "there was plenty of potential" for it to drop to $1.50 by the Autumn.

He also considered that although the Euro had fallen about 15% from around parity, he did not see Sterling falling against that currency.

The best brains in the City(on both sides of the Atlantic) with access to every bit of financial intelligence are still only making an 'educated' guess - and even then they are far from unanimous.

You also have to factor in that you will lose interest on that money for 9 months, which is an effective loss of 3 cents or so.

So personally I wouldn't bother.

It looks to me like this might be the new level. It has been around the same rate for a number of weeks now and if you flatten off the highs and the lows then this a pretty standard level.

Whilst I am sure it could go up (or down) further, about 1.65 seems a good rate to me.

This thread is a year old now and was started with the comment that the (then) rate of $1.91 was "so low" and several cents down on what it had been for a long time. A year on, and we're celebrating a rate of $1.70 - it's interesting how we've all come to accept these lower rates now.

No financial services authority requirements to place customers money is a seperate clients trust account, no compensation fund, no need to get accounts audited, no ombudsman etc etc. It is surely time that the government introduced strict financial requirements and proceedures for all currency exchange firms ...customers must have either 100% security and/or a compensation fund. At present there is neither so customers could just be left high and dry. This is not to say that "crown" are doing anything wrong. However their last accounts, published via company house, do not show a strong balance sheet position.[/quote]I stress that I have never heard of any transaction not being honoured, or any problems with the company.

However I for one would not dream of depositing my money with any firm without security for that money.

I've nothing against this company and have used it for an immediate exchange to HK$ where my currency arrived a few days later without any problem. However, it can't be denied that there is a risk and it might be a disaster waiting to happen.

I see that they will give you a rate for exchange right up to January 2011 but will take your Sterling for it today. I certainly wouldn't entrust my money to anybody for that length of time without some security.

Nevertheless, like Robert, so far I'm not aware of anybody not receiving their currency.

Would be nice, but who knows?

It's been more or less stuck in the $1.62-$1.68 range for a long time now. I have as little chance of accurately predicting the future as anybody but I don't see anything that's going to shift it much out of that range in the near future. (Cue immediate massive move![msnwink])

However, I've made a mental note to go see the FX trading guys when I get back to the desk in January and be less than complimentary about their predictions. I get paid in dollars so the exchange rate is a major factor for me. Fortunately this year I chose to take an average rate for the year rather than a spot rate so it's worked out OK overall.

Probably not wrong considering our banking rating was downgraded by S&P last week so we are now on par with Spanish banks and others and our credit rating could also soon be downgraded which will probably mean another drop against the dollar. The only reason I can think of as to why sterling has not fallen against the euro is the debt problems in the euro zone. Hope I am wrong.

$1.52 was the rate when we bought our home in 1994, but it has been as low as $1.42 not so long ago. Anything over $1.50 is acceptable, less than that and it is not. Just think it is not too long ago that we were getting $2.10 to the £ - wonder if we will ever see that again?

Always nice to be on the right side of the equation but I've learnt that getting it right is down to 99% luck and 1% judgement. When I make a profit I always like to feel that it's down to my brilliance but I know it's usually pure luck.

Yes, I would expect the downward trend to continue. A weak government just makes the UK economic situation even more fragile.
