View Full Version : Why do I keep having to log in?

During the same visit, I repeatedly have to log in again, after posting or even after going to another topic. Browser accepts cookies. What's wrong?

Oh, you too? I just thought it was me! It kept doing it yesterday but appears to be OK today (so far!). Perhaps our cookies are half baked?

I noticed that too and have hopefully now got it fixed. It was happening when you logged in and then entered the password for the owners area. The process of entering the owners password seemed to remove the login cookie.

Should be ok now...certainly seems a lot better from here anyway.

Let us know if it is still a problem and what you did just prior to the cookie disappering.

Like the half baked cookie comment - very good :).

Well, John, you need to keep a sense of humour/humor when your PC is giving you a hard time or you might be tempted to thump it!

It did seem to be connected with the home owners area password which it asked me for about 20 times and then told me I wasn't logged in. Whatever you did seems to have fixed it, fingers crossed!

Something seems to be working as I am now logged on when I tune back in, and I don't have to put the password for the villa owners in umptymillion times (just a shade of exaggeration here you understand!!).

It was all due to a bug with the forum software we use. I've reported it to the guy who wrote that bit of the code but have not had a chance to look at fixing it myself. Glad to hear it is now behaving itself more.

I've removed the password protection on the owners area - it now uses a list of users I have pre-defined who have access to the area. If you're not on the list it won't let you in!

Phew! I must be on the list! Easier for you too as you won't have to email it out to those who ask for it.

Well, I think I see something. Using Netscape Communicator (which I prefer) the software has short-term memory loss. With Internet Explorer, it remembers my log-in....at least so far.

I wonder if it's something to do with your Netscape cookie settings (Edit > Preferences > Advanced - from memory). You need it to allow cookies to be stored on your PC indefinitely for the auto login to work.

Got the "cookies forever" setting on. Works just fine with all the other sites that require log-in.

Hmmm...I'm not sure then. All the forums do is store a standard cookie on your PC with an instruction to keep it there for 30 days minimum.

What version of Netscape are you using as some are buggier than others.

I'll have a think about it.

Communicator 4.73. I know it's not the latest but I think the 6.x versions are full of bugs, and the interface is ungainly.

I'll have a look at this tomorrow as we have Netscape 4.7 sitting round on a couple of PC's. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks, not the biggest problem in the world. I appreciate it.

I'm glad this topic has been sorted. I had a problem on Saturday but didn't have time to mention it as I was off to work and again yesterday so didn't do it then. I found it only happened on one of the topics not all of them, it was rather frustrating and if I had a swear box here I think I'd be able to afford another flight to Florida

Thanks for sorting it. I'll go see what's been talked about in that section in a mo.

Have finally got to the section and I'm still having the same problem.
I can view page one of the security deposit topic but I can't get to the second page without logging on again.

Hi Jacqui

Just tried it here and it is ok for me.

What web browser are you using and are your cookies turned on?

John,

I have no idea to either question. My son set up this pc for me and he's still asleep at the moment so I can't find out - not if I want to escape from my bedroom alive!

I'll ask him when he gets up. It's only that page none of the others and that's the same one I was having problems with the other day.

Just been back to have a retry and it seems to be working okay now. Maybe page 2 was still half asleep when I tried it:)

I'm on the work computer now so anything could happen! But at home this am when I went onto a new topic my login disappeared, but when I went back after reading it it re-appeared. However, I was allowed into the homeowners section without any problems.

Fiona

PS John it's no good asking me about Netscape - I KNOW NOTHING!!

This all points to browser caches. For those of you that don't know about this, your web browser (the program you use the surf the web) keeps a copy of each page you visit so next time you visit the page, it just loads it from your hard disk and not from the ineternet.

The idea is that is speeds up the browsing experience.

The software is supposed to check if the page has changed since your last visit and if so to download the latest version from the internet. It is this bit that it does not always get right.

To make sure it does fetch the latest version from the Internet regardless, click the Refresh button on your browser's toolbar.
