(In case you needed one) another good reason to create your own holiday package.

A mother was left disabled after her trip to a water park in Egypt. She had booked her package holiday through a well known package holiday company and took her travel insurance with them as well.

The outing was booked with their rep who stated that the only way to ensure that they were covered by insurance on such outings was to book with them.

However, the tour op has only re imbursed the poor woman to the tune of £120; this is despite the fact that she has had to give up work and is on anti depressants and pain killers

The insurance apparently only covers accidents in her hotel! This means that the moment she stepped out of her hotel, she had no insurance cover.

The Association of British Insureres advised that tour ops insurance offered less cover but was more expensive

How awful, its hard to believe rogue companies like that are still getting away with taking peoples money under false pretences .

My goodness!! That is awful - when you take out your own insurance you do at least know what is covered!!

it's very sad but highlights a very important message about checking what you are actually covered for

i noticed recently a "are you a carer question" popping up on travel insurance websites, they will now not cover for a cancelled or delayed holiday if you "care" for someone and that persons health prevents the holiday if it has not previously been declared, this is a one to watch for as many people care for relatives and don't consider themselves as carers

I find that difficult to believe that she was only covered in her accomodation?

Epsecailly if the story is reported as the rep saying the only way to be covered is to book with us so she did and she wasn't covered, that doesn't make any sense to me.

This story comes from the Times; not a red top!

The other thing you need to check when you book the travel insurance through a tour operator is that if there is any dispute then there is usually a clause to say you cannot sue any part of the company. People have been caught out because they have booked a package through a high street tour operator and had an issue with the flights but have not been able to take any action against the company as they are part of the same group.

Insurance is one of the areas it is definitely worth making sure you are fully covered.

Travel insurance is always better to be booked independantly. It is also very important to read the small print to ensure that you are fully covered for every eventuality. A lot of people do not realise that some policies will not cover you for travel if there are close family not travelling with you who are suffering with terminal or critical illnesses that may cause them to have to cancel.

We always get annual insurance worl wide and make sure it has all we need as medical in USA is very expensive and flight companys we use always ask who is our insurers and say if they know them or not ,As it happens we have had good feed back when we say who so it gives us a good feeling we are ok .
