how safe?

something worrying me a little and i'm sure some of you villa owners can help reassure me

we have chosen a villa that is a little big for us but meets all of our needs or so we thought

the villa we have chosen has a downstairs bedroom with door going out to pool and the other bedrooms are all upstairs

my children are both in double sized beds at home and i'm not optomistic of getting them into a twin bed without a LOT of hassle, there is 3 bedrooms in the villa with queen/king beds but one is downstairs with that door out to the pool

what i am wanting to know is will it be safe for my teen to sleep downstairs, i am not worried about her going into the pool or kitchen area as that won't happen i'm more concerned about an intruder getting into the house and her sleeping alone downstairs

should i worry?

Could you not sleep in this room, that way your off spring would be together upstairs?
Often in American homes it is the master suite downstairs & this maybe the case in this home.

Most unlikely an eventuality that there would/could be an intruder during the night but have you asked your home owner if they have a security alarm? If so, some of these can be set to 'night' mode where just the doors and windows are alarmed but you can walk around freely inside.

The other alternative is for you to sleep in the bedroom downstairs and for your children to sleep in the other two double bedrooms upstairs.

i have been informed by a very near neighbour that the house is alarmed and there is a option of setting it to night mode

another worry to cross off my list should we decide to allow my teen to sleep downstairs

the master suite is upstairs and my son has great designs on this room, i can see me being in a twin at this bedroom swapping game [msnoo]

You could always get a monitor for a few dollars from Walmart so if you slept downstairs and the children are upstairs or vice versa you can be alerted if there are any unusual noises (I think I remember you mentioning special needs at some stage in the past) so if they are perturbed by being in unfamiliar surroundings or any other noise I'm sure you would soon hear.
If you use the alarm you will need to check with the owner what night mode does ie does it turn off the motion sensors or does it just alarm certain zones, to make sure that none of you set it off accidentally and awake to the Sherriff.

Hi Mizzy,

All our bedrooms are downstairs (we don't have an upstairs)and it has never worried me. We do have an alarm that can be set when you are in the house so that the doors and windows are alarmed but the motion sensors are off. We also have security bars on the patio doors but that's just because I like to make sure everything is as secure as possible when the house is empty.

Marie if the door goes out to the pool won't it have a pool alarm on it?

Personally (and I am the most paranoid mother on the planet) I could not let my children sleep downstairs whilst I slept upstairs it would have to be the other way around - in fact I will only book 2 storey villas now for that reason[msneek] but like I said I am the most paranoid mother I know[msnwink]

you know me Julie i'm mrs overprotective too so much so that i worry about them being upstairs on their own, i can just see me in than twin bed just to keep the peace

we think it will be ok with Jo now providing there is the night alarm as she's not the silent wanderer she once was and dh sleeps very light, if i have any doubts or worry we will revert to plan A and all of us upstairs no matter how much hassle

we are going to see how this night alarm works before making the decision

I like single floor American homes...mostly because all the bedrooms are on the same floor...never liked the idea of me being down stairs and my kids up...saying that my Grandsons room is the other end of the house...can't see him sleeping that far away from us till he is 21...he'll have to carry on sleeping in the baby bed in our room.....LOL!

Most of the houses on the community you are going to Marie have an alarm system in place so you can move freely around the villa with the alarm on at night. It won't go off unless someone accidentally opens a door or window and then you have time to turn it off. Alternatively, if and a very big if, there was an intruder, it would do its job and the sheriff would come immediately.

Don't let this worry you, just try and enjoy your stay.

We have an alarm system on our villa(as most all do) and ours allows us to have a series of beeps that can be heard throughout the villa if any exterior access or exit (all doors and windows)are opend and closed. Main reason we have this set perminent is children trying to get to pool area without the adults knowledge.

Not sure whether it is just Osceola but we have had to fit 'dead bolts' to any doors that lead outside the villa, including the two master bedrooms that have doors leading to the pool area. This is to comply with 'the powers that be' and for our licence.

Also, all the doors and windows leading to the pool area are alarmed, so if they are opened without pushing a button the alarm goes off.
