Well as some of you know we am going out to Florida on the 18th of July for 1 month, now I have jsut had a phone call to ask if I would go in on Mon for my hysterectomy, well I said no as I am going to Spain at Easter, so they gave me a date for the 11th of April now I know I have 12 weeks + before my hols, I thought that there had to be 12 weeks before a flight but they inform me its only 4, now I dont agree with that as you can't drive for 6 weeks.
So what I really want to know is do you think I would be ok to go after 14 weeks I don't want anything to go wrong in US or to spoil my holiday.

I would ring the airline you are travelling with and let them know and see what they say. Also ask your doctor about travelling.

I assume this would affect your insurance policy as well as you will need to inform them that you had the operation just over 12 weeks ago.

All depends on the person, our best friend is still not right after twenty weeks! My mum in law could have flown after a couple of weeks. I am pretty sure the recommended recovery period (i.e time of work) is 10-12 weeks.

The best person to speak to is your consultant.*

Inform your insurance company and check that if you have to cancel you will still be covered.* I had mine in early January and was back to normal after eight weeks and I had complications.* It really does depend on your recovery and if you do everything you should do and take things easy for at least the six weeks. Also is depends upon which way they do the op, the convential old fashioned way or by keyhole surgery. Every person is different.

The reason they do not want you to drive for six weeks is because of the pressure that you may have to apply in the event of an emergency stop. At this time I would say you will perfectly OK to travel but as I say check with the insurance company.

At the end of the day hols can be taken anytime, your health comes first and obviously operations aren't carried out for cosmetic reasons so you have to make the decision either to get it over and done with (personally I'd rather cancel a trip to Spain than to Florida) or to hold off until after your July trip (which I assume would then mean you wouldn't get a date till around August (bearing in mind you also shouldn't fly for a certain period BEFORE an operation). This means you are going to waiting best part of the year.

As you don't know what you recovery time is likely to be as it varies so much from person to person why not just bite the bullet (if you can still get the Monday option you may have to forfeit you Easter trip but would I'm sure then be able to undertake your July trip.

Whatever you decide good luck and wish you a speedy recovery.

I agree that you should ckeck with your insurance company first but if the consultant gives you the go ahead and you feel fine then there is no reason not to fly.

When I had mine I had 2 small children to look after and I was fighting fit by the 12 weeks.

Thanks for the replys, canceling my holidays is not an option as we need the holiday as this last couple of months has been difficult as my mum died suddenly, and as a family we need to get away, the consultant knows I have hols booked and I did say I would have it done in Sept when everything is out of the way.
As for insurance we have an annuel policy that is due for renewal at the end of March, so will have to look at that as they will probably class it as pre existing condition.
I am having a full abdominal , I had a c section 12 years ago and people tell me it is much like that, so I was ok and up and about with that the next day.
I wanted it doing last year but they wanted to see if medication worked but it didn't so this is the next step, I figure I have manged up until now so its not gonna be too bad to wait - just more of the same.

Hi Jacqueline
my friend has just had this done and was told 12 weeks and everything should be "normal" will drop you a line for a chat[grouphug]

At least if you can cope tiill later in the year you can hopefully get more prepared, as you say it sounds as if on top of everything else it would just be an added strain. After your Easter trip hopefully you will be better placed to decide, can you accept the April date if you want and cancel nearer the time if you don't think you will recover in time for Florida?

Technically you have to tell the insurance company as soon as you know of any change in your health (even if it is an annual policy) as it then gives them the option whether to cancel the policy (which to me is a bit off as if you buy an annual policy in good faith it should cover you for a year even if your health does deteriorate unexpectedly but they always seem to have it covered in the small print.

I have spoken to my GP and we are going to chat about it at my Feb app, she says to leave it booked and then see, I in my own mind had got it planned for Sept as mentally at this moment:( but will see after hols, thank you all for your replies sometimes its good to get other peoples opinions, and I knew that someone out there would have had it done and be able to say how they were.
They told me the wait time was 4/6 months but today they told me it was only 11 weeks as they had to meet their targets

Jacqueline , sorry to hear you are having a rather rough time. If I were in your shoes I would cancel Spain and take the Monday appointment ,then you would be certainly fit and well to fully enjoy your Florida holiday . At the end of the day its your decision and it seems with a hysterectomy people recover at different times . What ever you decide I wish you well and a very very speedy recovery.

Hi

I've had this done and I was of work for 8 weeks then went back part time, was back at work fully after 12 weeks, could have gone on holiday after 8 weeks but not walking all round the parks all day.I think you should be fine after 14 weeks, just relax and have a good time

ravtino
26-01-2008, 03:27
I wouldnt wanna miss out on my rides in the parks:D

Cruella DeVilla
26-01-2008, 04:01
I didn't dare go on any of the rides this trip incase my insides burst open a la Alien!! I was also too worried about the surgical clips inside[msneek]

When I had mine done the insurance Company wouldn't cover me so we had to change our dates until 5 months after my opp.

26-01-2008, 14:00
If in your own mind you have it planned for Sept and there is not a threat to your health by leaving it until then I would do so[msnwink]

canarypam
26-01-2008, 14:13
I agree with Julie I would be inclined to leave it until after my holiday in September if that was an option. A friend of mine had the op and it took her 3 months to fully recover. Obviously everybody is different and has different recovery times.

26-01-2008, 14:18
I had mine in June (some years ago) and we went to Florida for the October half term. although I felt fine at home was exhausted walking round the parks and had to keep taking rests. We went again at Christmas and I had no problems.

26-01-2008, 15:39
I am gonna wait till Sept, spoke to my friend whos in charge on that section and she says given all options she would wait as she knows how I've been and how much we are looking forward to Florida:D plus I wanna be in better shape and I have joined a Rosemary Conley class so I wanna stick at that[msnsmile]

I was told by my hospital/ GP and insurance company that they wouldnt class me to be fit to fly until 6 weeks after the op!! so I flew on week 7.... (of course) BUT take CARE - you may not be "back to normal" as soon as you think - some take 3 mths - some 6 mths - some depends on what style op you end up with - which you may not know till you come OUT of the op!!!! Good Luck - it was certainly one of the best things I did - BUT that is said with hindsight - not how I felt 2 weeks after my op!!!!! Good Luck Gwen

I must have been lucky. I had my op - full hysterectomy after 7 prior surgeries, ceasareans, ovarian cysts, sterilisation etc.etc., and with my Consultants permission, I flew to Florida 14 days later. Although very tired after the journey, I was able just to rest and recuperate in the sun and went home for my 6 week check up then returned to Florida for a further 3 months. Perfect recovery. After so many ops I suppose you could say I got used to it.

Good luck in September and enjoy both your holidays before then[8D]

You might want to check your travel insurance. We went to France for a long weekend within 4 weeks of my op and my insurers withdrew all cover on me - for 4 months!!

Luckily we had changed insurers when I was having my chemo treatment - although I was not covered for anything cancer related for 12 months, they now cover me for anything again and have brought the high surcharge down (£750 for cancer related claims) to normal rates.

You have been through enough recently, and may feel low after an Op like this, leave it until September. Sorry about the loss of your Mum -not a good year, eh.

Having had 3 sections and a hysterectomy they are very similar, I found, in how you feel afterwards. I was physically very well after a couple of weeks. However I did find I was extremely tired for about 4 - 5 weeks. Whether this was a result of the anaesthetic or not I don't know - all my sections were epidural so... I hope all goes well with your op when you do have it done and remeber to take as much time as you need to get over it; don't rush it.

Jacquline, just to update you, I haven't phoned my cousin as she has 3 sisters who live close by and 5 children from 13-30 so figured she may well be fed up telling how she is so have just kept up through her sister. It's now just 12 days since her op and I bumped into her in the supermarket today and she looks absolutely fantastic. She said she got up the day after her op and has been advised to walk a little more each day so, after shopping (her husband was pushing the trolley and picking up the groceries, they were going to drive to the coast and walk along the seafront.

She is pretty resilient and I knew it would be hard for her not to do anything as she has always childmined and at present has 12 children on her books from 2 babies to 9 years old at varying times.
Her husband is also registered to look after the children and between him and her daughter they covered last week but my cousin said she was still helping within a couple of days of getting home after bout 4 days in hosp. and obviously babies dont understand why she was there but not attending to them as she usually does as she couldnt change them but could still feed them.

She said she was getting tired in the evenings and trying to force herself to have an afternoon nap and also the on the 2nd or 3rd day after the op she was getting waves of nausea almost like morning sickness, and couldnt drink tea, which she has never been able to do when she has been pregnant, but that settled on the next day (her son made her laugh when he said "you did check the surgeon hadn't got you confused with someone else and given them the hysterectomy and you the IVF, didn't you?
I know you cant always go by what has happened to others but it sometimes helps to get ideas of recovery times to decide on your best course of action.
