Just had this email from Virgin. Does not apply to Gatwick flights (But that might change!!!). But great news for me as we fly from Heathrow this year.[msnsmile2]

Dear Traveller,

Following new guidelines from the UK Department For Transport, as of 7 January 2008 our passengers will enjoy an increased cabin baggage allowance. This applies to all of our flights, excluding those departing from London Gatwick. The following cabin baggage allowances now apply in each cabin:
Upper Class

Upper Class passengers may now take two pieces of cabin baggage onboard.
Individual dimensions are not to exceed 23 x 36 x 56cm (approximately 9 x 14 x 22 inches) and 17lb (8kg) in weight. These dimensions include all handles, wheels and pockets.

Economy and Premium Economy

Economy and Premium Economy passengers may take one piece of cabin baggage onboard.
Individual dimensions are not to exceed 23 x 36 x 56cm (approximately 9 x 14 x 22 inches) and 13lb (6kg) in weight. These dimensions include all handles, wheels and pockets.

In addition to this, passengers may carry the following personal items onboard, outside of their cabin baggage:

A handbag, pocketbook or purse of a reasonable size, which is not being used as a container for the transportation of articles that could otherwise be considered as baggage.
An overcoat or wrap.
An umbrella (pointed and/or sharp are prohibited) or walking stick.
A small camera and/or pair of binoculars.
A reasonable amount of reading material for the flight.
Food for infants that is to be consumed inflight.
A small amount of duty free goods.

Passengers departing from Gatwick are permitted to carry one item of cabin baggage each, of the same dimensions for each cabin listed above. Other bags, such as handbags, must be carried within the single item of cabin baggage, and the combined weight must not exceed 6kg for Economy and Premium Economy passengers, and 8kg for Upper Class passengers.

It is our hope that Gatwick will revert to the same offering as the rest of our flights from 31 March 2008. For further details of these changes please visit our website.

Please note that restrictions still apply to the carriage of liquids in your hand baggage.

In the meantime we hope that you find the increased allowance on all other flights useful when you next fly with us.

I know there is another thread but I think this is the first sight we've had of the detail of what's permitted.

I must say that I see all sorts of problems arising with terms like "reasonable amount of reading material", "small amount of duty free goods" and "small camera" to name but 3 of them. I don't find those guidelines at all helpful in telling me what I can (or can't)carry onto the aircraft. Can I take all those things at the same time? - I see nothing to suggest that I can't.

Given that the Duty Free will be bought airside just what does a passenger do with anything they have that doesn't pass the "small amount" test?

It just seems to give even more opportunity for the secuirity jobsworths to exert the authority they seem to be so fond of.

Just got the same email myself too[msnsmile2]

Worth noting the sentence about Gatwick............

It is our hope that Gatwick will revert to the same offering as the rest of our flights from 31 March 2008. For further details of these changes please visit our website.

What I don't get is the reports have all said Gatwick etc does not have the equipment to cope with this yet......I know we all get senior moments but aren't I right in thinking that these "guidelines" amount to exactly what we were allowed to take on pre the liquids scare anyway, so why do they suddenly need extra equipment and manpower to do so. They have always screened everything anyway so can't see the problem.
