From our experience, you definitely do not need to have 6 months on your passport. I also checked this with the Irish and US embassies just to make sure.

We travelled to the US last May and we both had only a few days left on our passports after the date of our return, and it was never an issue. It was only pointed out to us once that our passports were about to expire, and that we should make sure to renew.

You can look up the US embassy web site just to make sure.

I hope this helps.

It's not the US that requires 6 months on passports but sometimes various airlines do so make sure you check up with the airline you're travelling with.

Airlines can use it as an excuse to get you off the flight if they are overbooked - saves them having to pay someone to be bumped off!

This one got me checking as my passport expires 5 months and 28 days from our return date and I found this from the IATA site.

And it looks like it is o.k.

i emailled virgin and asked and they said 6 months so i emailled again and posted the link to the US embassy website and then they said yes ok, needless to say i pinted off the email from virgin and took it with me should there be any query at check in
