does anyone know how much the ipod phone costs in Florida?
also can you receive texts with it?` I am not at all technology minded but my DD wants one!
From the Apple store in Florida it's $399 plus tax so over the duty free allowance of £145.
From the Apple store in the UK £269 including VAT and they currently have free shipping.
Works on O2 network - to activate iPhone, you need to enter into a new 18 month minimum term airtime agreement with O2 on one of the selected tariffs.
Monthly Price £35 £45 £55
Minutes 200 600 1200
SMS Text Messages 200 500 500
It does everything a mobile phone does and more, including email and internet and is an iPod.
Both myself and Charlotte have one and they are very nice indeed [msntongue]
You can send and receive texts - just bear in mind for receiving a text is counted as one off your allowance.
I don't think you can use a US iPhone in the UK (if that's your intention) as they are tied to AT&T in the US.

I've got a UK iPhone and would echo Roger's sentiments - it's a fabulous phone and much more besides. In a totally different league to any other phone I've ever seen.
If you buy one in the US it will be tied to AT&T and will not work in the UK (well, it will, but it will think it's abroad and charge you at international rates). Much easier to buy one in the UK as it's not a massive price difference and it will work perfectly here.

If you are planning to buy in the states and bring your Iphone back to UK there are numerous websites on Goggle "unlock Iphone" that tell you how to unlock the phone then you can insert your sim card and use it. I suppose the problem would still be that you would be locked into a contract with AT&T. So this may not be cost effective.
I don't know how the purchase contract work in US if this would be the case or not.

You can indeed do this and as long as you do it before you plug it into your computer and before you sign up with AT&T. This then means you can avoid the contract with AT&T.
Be aware that it totally voids the warranty on the phone and any future phone updates may render the phone unusable (known to those in the know as "bricking your iPhone").
Personally I would not do it as the small amount of money you save by buying the iPhone in the USA will be offset by the duty you need to pay on the iPhone at customs when you bring it back to the UK. It's just not worth the risk.

Anyone tried using tel3advantage as a long distance provider with their iPhone when in the UK, or for international calls. It could work out cheaper, as it does not depend on the provider.
Going to MacWorld every day after work this January to see if version 2 is coming out. (Moscone Centre is about 10 minutes walk away from our apartment [msnsmile2][clap][clap]

I managed to activate mine really quickly on launch night - I surprised myself as I was expecting it to be slow as everyone else would have been trying to do the same. It did seem to get stuck on the page where you choose an O2 username but I refreshed the screen and it quickly moved on to the next stage.

Wow - although I'm not surprised at all. I absolutely love my iPhone and have hardly stopped using it since I bought it. The ability to keep up with OV wherever I am and whatever I am doing is worth it's weight in gold alone.

OMG its activated and its amazing[clap][clap][clap] Just set up my email[msnsmile]well with DH's help[msnwink]
I love it John its just fabulous[msnsmile]
I changed my phone last week and considered the iPhone, but opted instead for the Nokia N85.
Disaster - can't get it to work properly at all, you need to be a real techie to set it up and I have neither the time nor the patience. I transferred my contacts across from my previous Nokia and it lost about 25% of the numbers in the process. You can't imagine the problems it caused me. Can't get my damn email to work, keeps telling me "packet data not available" and the battery life just about exactly matches my patience with the blasted thing. Whilst on the train home on Friday for two hours I discovered that it has the latest Spiderman movie already built into it, which seems entirely suitable - hours of uselessly going round in circles until you give up in disgust. I left that movie before the end in the cinema and it's much worse on a miniature screen.
I'm giving it to my son who might be able to drive it properly and getting something more in keeping with my technical ability (and age, probably).
