I called Virgin today to ask for a quote for travel insurance. We have booked through them and wanted to collect a few quotes. Anyway, when he asked about medical conditions, I mentioned that my DH had controlled blood pressure as he is taking medication. They would not cover him at all.

Is this normal??? Are we going to have problems? The number of people who are on these drugs is huge - surely that is not going to stop us getting decent cover?

It depends sometimes on how long people have been taking medication, whether it's been increased recently and any manner of other obstacles posed by insurance companies.

I'm sure you'll get lots of recommendations for insurance companies - mine (AmEx) do cover high blood pressure controlled with medication but there are lots of others.

We have our annual insurance through HSBC (Free with our Bank account) and Cathy has high blood pressure. I contacted them and after visiting the Doctors they agreed to insure her.
Now all we have to do is contact them if she get admitted to hospital for her blood pressure or her blood pressure gets any higher otherwise she is insured indefinitely.

As Neil says, several of the travel insurances attached to "premier type" bank accounts will cover you.
You have to be able to tell them that you are not travelling against medical advise, that you are not terminally ill and that you are not travelling abroad to seek treatment.
( I think there is one other qualifying question, but I can't remember what it is
[msnembarrased])
If you can answer these questions satisfactorily then they will usually insure you.

You can convert your account to one of these type of accounts. You have to have a mortgage with them or a certain amount of savings to get the account for free, but if not you will pay about £12 per month for the account which will give you and your partner "free" health insurance.

We are travelling in 3 weeks and having had a partner who was in hospital as an emergency last week I have just had a crash course in insurance cover[msneek]

I was with Amex when I was last quieried. All they asked me for was the medication I was on and three pressure readings from my doctor (to prove stability I assume). That satisfied them and they gave me insurance with no additional premium.

I now have insurance via my bank, in the same way as Liz refers to.

We both have high blood pressure and have a very good policy from Marks & Spencers[msnsmile2] You can set it up on the phone, we didn't need to visit our doctor either.

I'm on medication for high blood pressure, have been for years, and Amex cover me - admit they are not the cheapest insurance company but two medical claims I have submitted (nothing to do with BP) have been met in full.

I do believe this is one part of travelling where you do get what you pay for.

Same for me. It does seem that it is better if you can speak to a human especially if it is for preventative reasons rather than answer the yes/no type of statement online.

No it doesn't[msnwink]

It rules you out from getting it for free!

I don't qualify on the above criteria but I have a premier account for which I pay a charge each month[msneek]

For anybody with a HSBC account you can upgrade your standard current account to Bank account Plus and get the same insurance as the Premier travel insurance for as little as £6.47 per month.
It is under written by Norwich Union.

The problem I find with travel insurance that you get free with your bank account is that it only covers myself and hubby, it doesnt include cover for children or am I missing something?

I do know the HSBC one covers children as well as long as they travel with you up to 18 years old or 23 if in full time education. It covers you for a max of 31 days per trip but you can travel as many times as you like during the year, as long as each trip starts/ends in the UK.

Thats strange that you were denied cover! I'm an airline captain with high blood pressure. It's controlled and the airline and my insurance company are both happy.
Good luck.

I have had annual travel insurance for the last 2 years through Barclays which is due for renewal next month. I have just had a letter asking me to contact them regarding my pre existing medical conditions so that they can provide me with a quote to renew. I rang them up and after lots of questions they are happy to continue to cover me and hubby for various ailments including asthma and hypertension, at a premium, but they have refused to cover me for migraine!
I have been on the internet and have found that several of the companies that specialise in pre existing conditions will not cover migraine. I have now managed to find a policy through More than that will cover us for everything and the good news is that it's £25 less than the Barclays policy and provides a better level of cover. I've no idea why migraine is such a problem but I'm not taking the risk of travelling to the US unless everything is covered.

HI All
I have just taken out insurance for our trip to Florida next May with Atlas Direct. I have raised BP which is controlled by medication, I also have an under active thyroid, again this is controlled with medication.
I had to call to tell them about my medical conditions, and after a short (over the phone)Q&A session they me told that I would be covered for everything including my current medical conditions, for no extra cost. [msnsmile]
