Does anyone know if Nintendo Wii consoles are region free. ie would one purchased in USA play games purchased in UK?

No they are not if you buy one in the US it will only work with US games
PS3 are region free so you can buy ps3 games in the US and play on UK consoles
If I bought a Wii in America does anyone know if you can buy US games online?

You can buy them from places like ebay.com and amazon.com but shipping may be expensive
