It is worth the drive over to St Petes to visit this unique collection of weird and wonderful work by Salvador Dali. In a modern museum building are displayed paintings and other art work from all eras of the artists life. It is really worth joining a guided tour. Though the paintings are fascinating to look at as they are, they contain many secret images and hidden meanings that you really need an expert to point out to you. Good gift shop also with some unique souvenirs such as clocks and watches based on the famous Dali melting watch theme as well as lots of prints. Not a full days entertainment in itself, but St Petes has a mainstream museum, the Sunken Gardens and lots of shops as well.

This is on our list for our next trip. Somehow we managed not to get there during a 3 week stay at Christmas (where did the time go?) but with a daughter studying A level Art it's a must for us!

Visited the Salvador Dali Museum in June 2002 and I thought it was a very good value - even just for the superb air conditioning when the temperatures were in the 100s outside!

The guides were very clued up and provide very informative tours but keep it interesting with little tit-bits of "gossip" from Dali and Gala's rather stormy private life. In the final hall you will be gobsmacked at the size of works like The Hallucinogenic Toreador and Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. IMO just impressive as the Nightwatch at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
There are also two areas for travelling art exhibitions - the two we saw were themed on Dali Clocks and the other was a general cubism display.
Gift shop a bit pricey but no more than any other museum!

Further details can be found at http://www.salvadordalimuseum.org

If you are down in the Tampa/St Pete's area it is well worth a visit but only for half a day maximum.

Enjoy
Cheers

Les,
We were thinking about visiting it when we go to Tropicana Field for the baseball (7.15pm start) - Is this a good idea???
