View Full Version : Totally gutted -update
Went to see my Consultant this morning about my shoulder, as I need an operation on it and was planning it for my return from Florida as I was leaving for Florida in 36 hours.
I have also had a bad knee since the end of July which has been up and down. Last night something happened and I could not stand on my leg and have been in excrutiating pain ever since. I hobbled in for my shoulder appointment, and the Consultant asked what had happened to my knee. To cut a long story short, I have to have knee surgery on Monday and can't go to Florida[msncry][msncry][msncry] I am absolutely gutted as you can imagine, in agony, and on crutches. I have also now developed an extremely bad mood so poor old DH will be watching his words when he returns from golf and I tell him my news. DH was not travelling on Saturday so not that bad for him.
I have had many ops. and am absolutely petrified of anaesthetics[msnscared] so just want this over with. My 'terms and conditions' were that it has to be done on Monday!!!! although I am still waiting for a confirmation phone call which should have been made by now.
Just going for another[msncry][msncry][msncry]
Sandra
Oh Sandra I am so sorry[grouphug][grouphug][grouphug]
Have they said what exactly you have done to your knee?? Is there anyway you can travel?[grouphug][grouphug][grouphug][grouphug][grouphug]
My knee happened without injury and out of the blue and I too could not walk but things have improved a lot over the past 5 weeks and I have yet to see the consultant.
I just really feel for you[grouphug]
Hi Sandra I'm really sorry thats happened, but on the plus side if there is one it was better happening here than on the plane or in Florida. Florida can wait your doc knows your knee wont. Hope all goes well on Monday. Let us know how it goes wont you.

Sandra, cant offer you any words of comfort as there are none, to miss florida anytime is the biggest blow of all!not sure bout our trip yet.......... travel insurance people were being funny yesterday ........ not for here
still your health must come first, i am sorry you are having such a bad time with your shoulder and now your knee, do you know whats wrong with it?[msnscared]dam knees are such a pain at times arent they!
hope everything goes well for you xx
I did not have an injury either Julie. It just 'happened' one day after I had been standing all day. I just put it down to being strained from the busy day.
The pain yesterday was the complete tearing of the cartiledge - again, I did not twist or turn to my knowledge - it happened after I stood up from my Rotary dinner.
No, the Consultant will not allow travel whatsoever as he says that I may do permanant damage with walking on it. Of course, he cannot stop me, but I would not be insured and I am in a great deal of excrutiating pain anyway. I can barely stand up.
Oh well, thank you for your good wishes everyone.

Oh Sandra I know how a torn cartiledge feels and its so painful I could not walk either when I did mine and the pain was worse than childbirth[msneek] I stood up from kneeling at the side of the bath but I still did not realise I had done anything bad until a few hours later[msnsad]
My insurance gave the ok to go (M&S) as it was an annual policy and this happened after I took out the policy I was fully covered - luckily I did not need to use it[msnsmile]
I am so so sorry[grouphug]
Sandra I am gutted for you. Please listen to what the doctor says. Will be thinking of you on Monday
So sorry to hear that you will have to miss your Florida trip Sandra.
Hope both your knee and shoulder are better soon and wish you all the best for Monday.

Sandra, so sorry you will not be going to Florida and we will again miss meeting up.
I will be thinking of you on Monday.
So sorry to hear about your Florida trip[grouphug] Hopefully you will be covered by your travel insurance.
Good luck with your op on Monday. We will be thinking of you. Let's hope you make a speedy recovery so that you don't have to wait too long for some Florida sun[msnsmile2]
What a shame for you Sandra, of course I really want everyone to be in the same boat as me and not able to fly either[msnwink]. Seriously it sounds really painful, take things easy. Try and be calm about the anaesthetic, I told my doc no more ops about 4 ops ago - someone somewhere is having a good laugh at my expense! Favourite music on my ipod and how much better things were going to be kept me going at the thought of mine, although I was still somewhat jittery, had the most amazing anaesthetist who not only kept me calm but somehow managed to get goodness knows how many lines into my shot to pieces veins without it hurting. Of course I looked like I had done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson afterwards, but I hope he is doing my next op ... in about 3 months time.
So take things easy, feet up and take the painkillers, and you on crutches now?

That is disappointing news Sandra[msnsad]
Hope the surgery goes well and that you can reschedule your trip for the not too distant future[msnsmile]
Just had a call from the Consultant which was even more depressing[msnsad] He had told me that I would be feeling okay within 10 days or so and just had to take it easy for a further 6 weeks (sunning myself in Florida I had thought). He now says that until he discovers what is going on inside my knee on Monday, he can't say when I can fly but it will more than likely be at least 4 weeks:( This was not part of my 'terms and conditions'[gun].
Had no problems at all with my Insurance but still not made the all important call to cancel my flights[msneek] just don't seem able to pick up the phone just yet as I then know I will be accepting I am not going tomorrow[msnmad]
Think I will hobble on my crutches to my friends coffee shop and depress everyone else[msnwink][msnwink]
Sandra
Sandra, so sorry to hear your news. I think when you take the bull by the horns and accept you cannot go this time you will feel a little bit better. I know how dissapointing it is as my parents had to cancel coming with us last Christmas just 10 days before we flew due to the heart condition my dad has flaring up. He has since had surgery and now, fingers crossed, they will be coming with us next Easter. But I just did not feel like going to Florida myself as I had so many things planned while we were out there.
Disappointment is always hard, but your health is the most important thing.

Sandra - who are you flying with and when did you book tickets. I don't know if this applies to all airlines but when we were booking a ticket with Virgin for my sister I rang them to explain her special circumstances. As her husband had an excisting condition she wouldn't be covered by insurance but I was told that the ticket was valid for travel for one year from date of purchase.
We waited until end of November to book her for March this year, the week before we flew her husband was admitted to hospital so she wasn't able to travel. He died a week after our return so I contacted Virgin to see if we could change the booking to November. We had to pay the difference in her ticket price £1.74 and send proof of hospital admittance for the outward journey.

Sandra [grouphug][grouphug] for you
Sending my very best wishes to you that everything goes well for you next week
Elaine
Thank you for all your good wishes everyone. I have now telephoned the airlines and cancelled[msncry]but unfortunately I am still feeling very sorry for myself!!!!!
Bargainqueen, it does not matter about my flight tickets as I will get everything back from my insurance, so hopefully will get an even better deal than I had and have change to spare[msnwink] Thank you for the information though.
Have now been and had my 'holiday' hair cut and colour and off with some friends tonight for an Indian so that should take my mind off things. It is the actual physical pain that is keeping me feeling down I think. Still, I should think myself lucky as I did not have to queue for the ladies loos today - I just went straight in the disabled. Still, only 2 more days and then begin the process of recovering and hopefully booking tickets. Roll on Tuesday[msnsmile2]
Have a great weekend everyone.
Sandra
Sandra the Nurofen plus Ibuprofen and Codeine were recommended by my physio to help with the pain[grouphug]
Keep your chin up and look forward to your next trip[grouphug]

Sandra,
sorry to hear your news, I've been away on business so just picked up on this.
I hope things go well for Monday - Florida will always be there and you can go another time, your health is the most important thing and by getting this sorted before you go, you know you will be able to spend more time shopping when you're out there [grouphug]

Thank you Karen, Dianna and Maureen. I definitely won't be at WWB for Xmas as we are off to San Diego and then WWB on 20th January so looks like our paths still will not meet Karen. No yet anyway.
Julie, I am not allowed any of the drugs you mentioned but have just been taking co-dydromol which helps me during the night. I am not a pill taker so just have two at bedtime. It worked last night, so here's hoping.
Had a lovely Indian meal and good company so off to bed soon.
Goodnight.

Sandra
Sandra, glad the Co-Dydromol work for you, they gave me Co-Dydromol and Dicloflex when I went to A&E the first night it happened and they had horrible effect on me[msnsad] I could not stand up, lost my balance and felt very sick etc not sure wihich of the two caused it[msneek] but then I am very drug senstive - if there are any side effects listed I get them so I am very wary of any medication but the Nuirofen Plus I am ok with[msnsmile2]
Hop you are feeling a little better today[grouphug]
That'll probably have been the codeine part of Co-dydromol I would think. Quite a lot of people have strange side effects from codeine but, if you can take it, it's very effective.

Just read about your knee and forthcoming surgery . Im so sorry that this had to happen but I agree with the others better it happens at home and not over there . I wish you good luck with the op, and a very speedy recovery . I know its cold comfort at this point but Florida will always be there and you will be in better form for the parks and the shops with your two good knees. Let everyone spoil you while you recuperate .
Just wanted to wish you all the best for tomorrow Sandra[grouphug]
Thank you Olive and Julie.
Getting more nrevous as the time gets closer, but hopefully this time tomorrow I will be on the best side of the plan[msnwink]
Just going to have the 'last supper'. Promise I will be good Julie - well perhaps I will make an exception tonight.[msnwink]

Just caught up with this thread and just want to wish you well with your op tomorrow Sandra. I am sure you will soon be able to enjoy some Florida sunshine and you have San Diego trip to look forward to as well.
It will be the codeine, as Blott says, I have also had very strange side effects after taking it after surgery.
Good luck and hope all goes well tomorrow.

[msnscared][msnscared]I am just going to have a shower and then off to the hospital where I will be a nervous wreck for 4/5 hours.
Well, I must thank each and everyone of you for your postings, PM's and telephone calls. Although I have not met some of you, the support is absolutely unbelieveable. Thank you so much, you have kept me going.
Will be back on line hopefully tomorrow.

thinking of you Sandra, hope you'll soon be up and running around xx[grouphug]
Well, I am sitting here in my theatre gown and was all ready as they told me when I arrived today I would be going down at 3.00pm. Now they say it will be after 5.00pm. Don't know if the nerves will stand it.
At least I have a beautiful room with a view outside of all the out patients and visitors arriving, so plenty to watch. Could do with something from the menu though!!! and a cup of coffee would be great.

Now nearly 18:00 hrs......wonder how she is ?
I shall feel better when I see her next posting[msnscared]
Sandra, have been away for the weekend so have only just caught up with this.
Hopefully by now surgery will be over and you'll be well on the road to recovery. What rotten timing though, just before your holiday. Still maybe just as well it happened before you went away and not while you were out there. At least now you can look forward to re planning your trip.
Wishing you a very speedy recovery.
Hi everyone
I am still alive and kicking!!!! Well almost kicking.[msnwink]
Anaesthetic did not go as well as I would have liked, but only as bad as last time - no veins etc. The surgeon had to do a bit more than expected, but I should make a full recovery and have an appointment next Wednesday when hopefully I will be handing the crutches back.
I am just so relieved it's over and although I feel quite groggy today - went to be as soon as I got home at noon - I know I will feel better tomorrow.
Already been browsing for flights and DH says I can stay longer than my original 7 weeks[clap][clap] He will be out mid October but probably will be glad to get rid of me well before that[msnwink][msnwink]
Thank you again everyone, you are all great.

Sandra[/quote]Crumbs, you're getting better in leaps and bounds! :)
Blott
This was no where near as painful as your shoulder surgery. The Consultant assured me before I had it done as he knew how long it had taken me to recover from my shoulder. It is a much quicker recovery with ther knee thank goodness.
My other shoulder which they gave me a second hydro cortisone injection 'whilst under the anaesthetic' is no better, but I really can't even think about facing up to that again at the moment so guess I will have to put up with the pain[msneek]
Hope you are feeling better.
Sandra
Sandra how is your recovery coming along? I have my consultants appointment tomorrow[msneek]
Julie, am now walking without crutches. Saw the Consultant on Wednesday and he wants me to get a folding walking stick - but only to slow me down. I still have a little limp and a bit of stiffness in the knee but I have done as instructed and not spent too much time walking. I drove my car yesterday on a 1 hour journey so it was a start.
Flying Thur. Virgin UC and will do all the things that I have been advised to do, so all in all, it has tunred out well.
Hope your appointment goes to plan. Don't put up with having to wait as it is more damage in the end and they like to fob you off sometimes with physio etc.
Good luck and let me know how it went.
Sandra
Glad to hear you are on the mend Sandra. Your lovely long holiday can only help [msnwink]
