View Full Version : Basic Food Stuff
Hi Everyone,
Been to FL heaps of times, but this is the first time in a Villa, and away from the Pondarosa and Sizzlers Breakfasts, etc. (arriving next week :D [8D] )
We find American Bread very 'sweet' I think it is something to do with the flour they use, and not necessarily any added sugar. (I have diabetes)
Can anyone recommend a brand name available from Wall-Mart similar in taste to say Hovis White or Kingsmill.
Secondly, everyone is telling me about an English Supermarket over there... Anyone heard of it ? if so where is it ?
Best Wishes to all

Not sure about an English supermarket, but Publix (they are everywhere) has an English section. Alternatively, there is an English shop in Old Town.
Sorry, I can't help on the bread question (I quite like the taste of American bread!).

Keith
Last time we were there Publix had started selling French sticks which tasted as good as at home. I don't think there is an equivalent brand of bread to ours, it's one thiing that gets asked often. The Union Jack supermarket in Old Town has a selection of English goods but we decided they were far too expensive, we'd live without them for a fortnight.
Thanks Steph,
I think in the many trips in the past we've never really had to 'Shop' for foodstuffs as we've allways done motels and ate out. This trip is going to the first in a Villa, The kids have done the mickey-mouse autographs, charactor breakfasts etc. heaps of times, there happy just to stay in the pool until they turn into prunes, Its time for poor ol Hard working Grandma and Grandma to have a little bit of a relaxing, hassle free holiday. [8D]
I'm taking my lappy with me as I need to keep up with some homework at College, so I'll tune in now and then, and deliver our findings on the 'Bread Survey'
We're going to Davenport Lakes, its off the 27 about 14 miles from Haynes City, I know theres a Wall-Mart which is a bit cheaper than the one on the 192 but I'm not sure about a Publix. Anyone know ?
The Italian bread sold in most supermarkets tastes most like English bread. It isnt sweet. Publix now has a sizeable English section. It sells baked beans, branston pickle, squash, marmite, some cakes and biscuits such as choc digestives , English tea ( at a price), Cadburys chocolate, canned treacle pudding ( dear!!!) Ambrosia creamed rice pudding ( dear!!) Ambrosia custard ( dear!!), Homepride curry sauces etc. The English supermarket in Old Town has more choice - Jaffa cakes at about ten times the price they are in the UK, picked onions, marzipan and roll out icing, mint sauce, Bisto, Walkers crisps etc. These are really for expats such as myself missing English food. I dont think anyone just over for two weeks would want to pay the prices.
Keith, there is a brand new Publix about two minutes south of Davenport Lakes ( on 27 near Highlands Reserve).

For sure go for the ITalian bread at the Publix and I do believe they have it a Walmart also. The other breads are made with butter as the Italian kind is made with baking powder. But I do love the way Wonder bread sticks to the roof of you mouth|
Keith,
Esprit is spot on. The UK shop in Old Town is extortionate with their prices. If you are close to Champions Gate their is a fantastic Publix there. I hate shopping but I am the first to volunteer to go to Publix.
Mike.

The normal bread you buy in supermarkets is not as sweet as hotel bread....the cheapest breads are not sweet....and most like English bread....
Hi Keith,
Like Patti says above we also buy the Italian bread from Publix. Have used the Publix on the 192 but would imagine they all sell it. It's the best:D
Quoted from Julie Carty :-Keith, there is a brand new Publix about two minutes south of Davenport Lakes ( on 27 near Highlands Reserve).
Thanks Julie, Are They 24hr ? Our flight comes in quite late, and I know I should'nt as been there plenty of times but I always get hoplessly lost and it takes me about three hours to pick up my bearings even with a map and compass !
I know what folk are thinking, Why don't you go in the morning ....
But I'm STILL wide awake, and as excited as a bairn with a new toy [:o)]
... I DON'T WANT TO GO TO BED....... [}:)]
Publix are not usually 24 hours. But all is not lost. Will you be coming along the 192? Because directly opposite the Dragons at the Formosa Gardens Shopping Plaza (where the Outback, Giordano's, Carrabbas, TGIF are if that helps!) is a Walgreens which is open 24 hours. You can buy milk, cheese, eggs, bread, coffee and soft drinks etc.
Thsnks Fiona,
Providing I don't get lost, I usually leave the 417 at exit 6 passing a big Eckards Store on my left, turn left onto the 535 and then down to the 192. Turn right at the bottom and head West. (Sounds Easy, Don't it ... Bet I get lost AGAIN :( )
So Where is :- Dragons at the Formosa Gardens Shopping Plaza (where the Outback, Giordano's, Carrabbas, TGIF are if that helps!) Before Old Town , or after, or is that the new complex on the junction of the 535 and 192 ?

Or if you miss that Walgreens Keith there is one just a bit further south on the 27 just past Hampton Lakes on the left at the corner with CR54 (now Ronal Reagan Parkway. Publix normally shuts at about 10 so if you are on a scheduled flight you should make it. We do usually, we can't go on th eway from the airport because there's never room to get any shopping in the car with all our luggage.

The publix is usually open till 11pm or 12pm so if you are not that late in coming in. Some owners do a welcome package for an extra charge so you might want to ask the owner if this is possible in the villa you are renting.
Formosa Gardens Shopping Plaza is immediately after marker 5 on the 192, past Old Town.
Try White Mountain bread at Publix. We found it to be the closest to English bread that we could find. Can't belive how expensive bread is in Florida [:0].
Jeff
Expensive? We just get the 64 cents large sliced loaf from Wal-Mart. Yep, it's sweet (and not much good for savoury filling sandwiches) but, turn it into toast and it's just wonderful, mmmMmm! Great with a dollop of sugar free marmalade for breakfast... [8D]
That's a good point Steph, and one I hadn't thought of. The amount of SHOES etc. 'Her Who must be Obeyed' packs for a couple of weeks, I think I should Hire an 18 Wheeler......
I think I really going to try NOT to get lost this time......
I allways used to end up on the 51 (Colonial Drive !) after going right round the 417 a couple of times.....
Bit like the Periphique in that other Country beginning with 'F' (Why hush my mouth for Swearing [:0] )

We like the french bread in Publix but never seem to find any sliced bread that we really like.
Keith - I'd rather you didn't mention the Peripherique - all I can say is thank goodness they had the foresight to make two or three exits to go down South as I am sure everyone must miss the first one!!!!!!
Well, I promised I'd get back to you on the Bread 'Round' and I must confess, We settled for the 'Wonder Loaf' it won hands down. The Italian bread was just as nice, but 'WOW' [:0] you know your buying it. Had a supurb trip, the weather has been very kind to us, The sun is just about rising and its gonna be a scorcher AGAIN ! [8D]
Thanks to all who contributed to making this trip so much more enjoyable.
Rub it in Keith!! We woke up this morning to our first frost!!!:D
Glad to hear that you're having a great time. :D:D:D

Hi,
We do not like the sweet tasting breads. In other parts of the U.S. We ask for sour dough bread. They should have it in Florida.
Best of luck

You can get some nice bread at Chamberlins Health Store at Winter Park. This is a proper health store-not like GNC or Vitaminworld.
There is another one left off the 192 at John Young Parkway (there's a name change on the street). Chamberlins in the first shopping plaza on the right. Not as big as Winter Park but still good and carries a good range.
If you really want to indulge yourself-then try the Yalaha German Bakery at Yalaha. That's up the 27 towards Clermont, right along the 19 to the end of the road at T junction turn left past Mission Inn and follow sign to Yalaha-bakery is on the left. Pizzas, cakes and pastries to die for. Saturday mornings they have entertainment in the garden at the back.
Basically it's on the road to Mt Dora
try publixs italian sandwich bread its like the bread from the uk..

We always go for the sour dough bread, as we also find the US bread too sweet. Best we found was at Publix in their bakery section, unsliced. The packed stuff just didn't taste the same, so at least that is the sane as the UK!![msncool][msncool][msncool]
