If anyone's in Florida round these 2007 dates, you might just be lucky enough to catch a shuttle launch.

03 August - not a shuttle but a launch nevertheless

09 August - includes a teacher, Barbara Morgan, who is the current Teacher in Space programme member and was back up to Christa McAuliffe on the programme until her death in 1986 on Challenger.

20 October

06 December

We fly out on the 10th so ar ehoping it will be delayed. We had tickets for th elaunch last August but didn't see it as it was delayed well into September. It will be just our luck that this one goes on time.

Christine

We were the same we had tickets for last August's launch and never got to see it. We fly out on the 12th so I am hoping that it will be delayed again and we can get to see it.

We were SOOOOOOOO lucky to see the launch of STS-98 in 1998 on our first Disney holiday.:D:D:D:D:D

Absolutely awe inspiring, and need not cost you a cent over the fuel to drive to Titusville and park at the side of Highway #1 to watch.

We're over again in December this year, arriving on the 8th, so we're keeping our finges crossed that the launch of STS-122 will be delayed by a few days.

Is there any way of finding out the scheduled time of the launch? We are arriving on the 20th October at about 2.30pm and would love to see the launch

I hope I'm allowed to post this link?

http://www.nasa.gov/missions/highlights/schedule.html

This shows all launches, and you can click through to each launch for more detail.

If a moddy object to the URL, visit the official NASA site and search for "missions highlights"

Good luck!

I have booked our two kids into KSC space camp for kids from the 30th July to the 3rd August, so they may well get to see the ongoings about the launch and maybe see the astronauts etc.

If anyone is here this weekend the shuttle is due back to KSC from Andrews AFB on a piggyback flight, sometime today or tomorrow.

If you've never seen it, this is an amazing sight, the shuttle atop a 747 plane coming in to land, and not something you will see too often.

Check the local news channels for up to date info as plans can change quickly due to the weather.

If this is the one Sam and Connor did I am sure they will have a ball and it would be exciting for them if they actually get to see something.

Returning home on the 11th October, shame the kids would love to see it, our first visit in 2000 we travelled over on 3 different occasions to see the shuttle, each night it was cancelled, the fourth night we stood outside the villa and saw it take off.

Surprised to see how many times it takes off.

Thanks for that info Blott. We are flying in to Florida from Chicago on 3rd August so hope to catch sight of the launch on the 9th. We have just missed out on several in the past due to weather delays.

We will be there for the launch on 6 December. Does anyone have any tips on the best vantage point.

Cheers

Sue, we saw the June 07 launch from Titusville. If you drive over the bridge towards the island then you'll find plenty of places to park along the edge of the water and you'll get an amazing view. You can see right from when the rockets fire.[msnsmile2][msnsmile2]

Some people were bathing in the water while they waited. Best of all there were decent public toilets by the boat launch area! (It's a long wait so you don't want to be too far from one of these!!) A group of people formed a Launch club and they always go to watch the launch from here. They have a tent, lots of monitoring equipment and broadcast what is happening with the launch and they'll happily tell you anything that you want to know. They also sell ice-cold cans of soft drinks for $1.

We got chatting to some Americans from Wisconsin who had a telescope all set up, and they let us have a look through it at the launch pad.

My tip would be get there early, take a picnic, swimming stuff, plus books or anything else that you fancy doing and treat it like a day at the beach. If you fish then take your rods too. Getting home again can take ages because of all the cars etc. so it's a good idea to eat dinner in Titusville and let the rest of the traffic dispurse.[msnsmile2][msnsmile2]

Thanks for your reply Carla, it's a great help. One more thing to add to the itinerary. but at least we can combine it with a day at the beach.

Sue :)

There's only a little sand Sue, in some places, but that didn't seem to stop people from enjoying a paddle and dip in the water.[msnsmile2][msnsmile2]
