my husbands visa is only a year old but in his passport that has now run out does he have to apply for a new visa
No, if his visa is still valid but his old passport isn't, then he just needs to take the two passports with him when he visits.

thankyou it was such a hassle getting the last one didnt want to have to go through all that again

i've been taking both old and new passports for the past 5 years with no problems. He may be asked to step into the office the first time,to update their system, but it's no problem.
How long are the visas valid for?

It all dedends on how long they are issued for anything from a month to 10 years
