One extreme of Florida to the other! We have been to both, on different trips (they're about 900 miles apart by road).

The Pensacola area has miles and miles of white sand beach, so if lying on the beach is your thing, the area has much to be said for it. You probably would not want to stay in Pensacola itself, it's just a big city. The nearest beach is Pensacola Beach on Santa Rosa Island, about 8 miles by bridge from the city.

The beaches on the Keys are not as long and not as many, but very nice, and to my mind more scenic. There are more things to do on the Keys besides lying on the beach - e.g. snorkeling on the coral reef (or glass bottom boats), and visiting Key West, which is like nowhere else in the US. Also the weather in the Keys is a lot warmer.

Put it this way. From Central Florida I would make a special trip to see the Keys, but not to see Pensacola - there are beaches just as good much nearer.

Just as an off-shoot question - what is the town of Seaside like that was used in the filming of the Truman Show?

Seaside is very pleasant, if a bit twee. The architecture is worth seeing, very different from most places in Florida. We went to a wedding there a few years back (on the beach!), and it was a great location for that. Everything is very close together - you could stay there without a car if you worked out how to get there without one. And the beach is great.

Thanks for your replies, I think we are going to go for the Keys, on the basis there will be more for our kids to do, next question which of the keys would you recommend? Thanks again

We have been to Grassy Key Vanessa and found there were quite a few things to do with children. We went to the Dolphin Research Centre last time and loved it.

We have also been to the Panhandle and we also liked it there. We had intended to go to Seaside but as we were only there for two nights we did not have time. We did enquire about staying there but it was mega expensive.
