Hi all,

I've just received our American Express Dollar travellers cheques. I know I have to sign them all on the top now, then sign at the bottom in front of the shopkeeper or whoever when I use them, but when do I fill in the date section? Do I date them all now when I first sign them, or date them as and when I use them?

Any help appreciated!

Hi

You should only date them at the time that you cash them in and sign them for the second time.

Remember to take your ID with you, 9 times out of 10 you won't need it, but there are still a few places that require ID to be produced at the time that you sign the cheques.

You wouldn't want to get caught out, so best to carry a credit card just in case, if you'd rather not have your Passport / Driving License with you at all times.

The good thing is that they are as good as cash in the US.

I was never asked for ID, but always had my driving licence with me anyway

Damn!

I've already signed five of them ($50 each) before I decided to check. Do you think it will be okay to just cross that date out and re-date it when I cash them?

Thanx for the replies BTW.

Hiya

Cant see there being to big a problem with the date already being on but just in case as a last resort try taking them to Walmart or 1 of the other supermarkets as you know what checkout staff are like for checking things really closely not!

Hope this helps

I`ve got all my travellers cheques now (from M&S) and they are Visa not American Express. I know it does`nt matter but they don`t look so nice

I agree Chris, Nationwide card is great to use abroad as no commission and a good exchange rate. With regard to dates I find I more often than not use the US style rather than UK even when at home.

we now always use our nationwide card. You get a really good exchange rate at the ATM machines, although you do pay about $2 to the machine operator.
I too got caught out with writing the date the English way. This was at Clearwater beach, the cashier just looked at me as if I was mad when I said we English always write it that way round. She even got her supervisor to check it was OK!
