I have to travel from warwick to the Brighton area on a Sunday evening:( Does anyone know how heavy the traffic is around heathrow at about 8pm. If it's usually at a standstill i'll try a different route, maybe use the A14 and onto the M11 although I not sure this is any better.

It should be thinning out a bit by that time - but I wouldn't count on it. [msnscared]

Hi Lynda

Sundays can be strange on the M25 sometimes its good, sometimes its bad.
Best to come down the M40 so yu wont have to go as far round the M25 as you would using the M1. M1 also has bad roadworks near junctions 10 - 7.
Would say this is better than coming M11 and then the other way round M25 as that can be a real nightmare sometimes as well. At least using the M40 you'll have less miles to do.

Unfortunately trying to predict what the traffic will be like on the M25 at any time is difficult. My son lives one side of the Heathrow exit and we live the other. We have frequently driven this route on a Sunday at around 8pm and we never know what to expect. We have had long traffic jams and other times have sailed through. The road works which were in that portion for two years have now finished. Those road works did contribute to the problem. You have to remember that lots of people living just outside the M25 are returning from weekends away and the road can be busier during this period. It's all a bit pot luck really.

My experience of Sunday evening is that you are better hitting Heathrow around 5-6. It always seems bad later on, I assume people are coming back from visiting at that time.

bad traffic use the m40 as suggested above as the m1 roadworks are also awful, 2 weeks ago I went to Leicester is was very bad on the way up to Leicester (M1 roadworks) and also very bad on way back... AVOID unless you travel earlier than 8pm.

By the way I live near Heathrow so normally do M25/M1 to Leicester and the M25 was busy too due to the M1 roadworks but busy all the way around in fact I got off and went onto the a41 to get home.

Thank you all, I knew this was the place to get an answer. I think we will take our chances with the M40 and the heathrow section. We are attending a birthday party in Yorkshire, dropping my daughter off at uni in warwick on the way home. We did the reverse trip 2 weeks ago to take her to uni and spent hours parked on the motorway near heathrow,I've got to admit I didn't want to repeat the experience going the other way. But I suppose this is what you get when you have to use "the biggest carpark in europe"[msnembarrased]

Lynda,
I'm on that section (M4 to M3) every work day and some weekends. The clockwise direction ( opposite to you) always seems to have more jams than the anti clockwise so I'm sure you will be fine. I'll be on it about 6pm tomorrow and could give you a call if there are any major problems at that time.
