Thinking of hiring one of these instead of our usual Chrysler Voyager my husband loves the look of them (the Chrysler 300 that is), there is only 4 of us 2 adults a 16 year old and 11 year old, anyone have any views on these cars for example, luggage space? Thanks in advance

My wife and I had one for 3 weeks earlier in the year. Nice drive, comfortable and masses of room in the back. Bit of a struggle to fit two large suitcases and a golf bag though.

Plenty of room for 4 people. We had one in California last year and managed to get all our luggage in the boot without any problems - the boot was very large in comparison to most US cars.

Diesel model has been out in UK for a while I believe.

IMO it is about the best car of its class in the USA - mind you it has a lot in common with the Mercedes E Class.

I know Roger's Dad hired one a while ago and another owner on Crescent Lakes emailed me and amongst other things said "Roger's Dad has hired a Bentley" - must say something for the car - I know it turned heads in Beverley Hills which I'd guess is not an easy thing to do [msnwink]

I am aware that there is a waiting list for the diesel model(the CRD)
I was pointing out that it was released earlier in the year and not as you state in this coming Oct.

If you look in Autotrader there are pages of 'secondhand' diesel models available for sale now - albeit mostly with only a few hundred miles on the clock.

Hello all, i found the 300 to be a bit of a barge on wheels, the brakes were vague[msneek] to say the least, and the handling was a bit scary[msnscared] especially when your on those sweeping freeway ramps. As for boot space, quite small for such a large car.
If you just have to have one, go for the Hemi.

It is a powerful type of engine. In this case a 5.7 litre V8

I would doubt if you would get one for rental, unless you saw Roger for one of his specialist cars.

Also why would you want one in Florida - the 3.5 litre engine has masses of power.

[/quote]The Hemi is the top of the range, it has an engine which shuts half of its cylinders down when not needed e.g. when your stuck in traffic or driving in town at low speeds, which means you should save a bit on fuel consumption.

Sorry, but that's not correct. The 300 may well shut down half its cylinders when not required, but that's not the definition of a Hemi. Hemi doesn't stand for 'half', as you might be suggesting.

Hemi (from "hemisphere") or "crossflow cylinder head" is a design of internal-combustion engine in which the cylinder head's combustion chamber is of hemispherical form. The term, "Hemi engine" is a trademark of Chrysler Corporation, though the concept is used by many manufacturers.

The hemispherical cylinder head increases the engine's efficiency through reduced thermal energy loss and increased airflow through the engine (a hemisphere has the lowest surface area to volume ratio, meaning the most space for combustion while losing the least amount of energy to the engine walls). Drawbacks such as increased production cost have meant that it has been a rare design. Placing the intake on the opposite side of the engine also reduces the air intake temperature and increases efficiency.

Chrysler have been making Hemi engines since the 1950s. Porsche and BMW are also notable users of the hemi design.

We hired one (Hemi) in May this year, very "floppy" drive, very fast, had to change it twice, first one had problems with the alarm, and the second one had what I think was a piece of the sump hanging off, just going for a full size next week as there are only 3 travelling.

We hired one of these when we went to California in April, bags of room for 2 adults and 2 teens.
Even drove it down Lombard Street in San Fran .

Don't worry about it Jovi, I've had three now, just get it when you get there, there, won't be a choice, and you won't be disappointed.

I had 4 adults, four hard cases, 4 wheelie flight bags and assorted duty free and a small shop from publix in mine. Admittedly one case and most of the shopping was in the back seats with Mrs. and Mummy Macka, but we did it.[msnscared]

Went to have a look at one of these today at our local Chrysler garage[:O] Wow they are big, hubby would like one as the family car I am not sure, so having one in Florida will make my mind up either way.
At the moment I drive our 4 wheel drive car ( Hyundai Terracan ) I like the height of the driver seat, in the Chrysler the seats seem that low I can just see over the bonnet, and it is a huge bonnet.
They are a very nice looking car and thankfully the boot is enormous, so I think this will be our car in Florida anyway, as for when we get home we shall see[msnwink].

From a distance the grille has the look of Bentley and it is easy to make that mistake. Sadly, when it gets nearer you see the difference!!

I've rented a 300 a couple of times and I found them sloppy to drive but comfortable. Not as comfortable as the Lincoln Towncar though which has the same driving feel.

OK, we're getting a bit off-topic here, but never mind - apologies to any non-petrolheads out there :)

I agree Dave....not all crossflow engines are hemis, but all hemis are crossflow designs :D

Generally the hemispherical combustion chamber design puts the intake/exhaust valves in-line, rather than side-by-side, although the inlet and exhaust valves are not simultaneously open and there is no continuous flow. By definition, this is a crossflow design.

Yes Sniff and Dave,

With the bonnet design being on the same ergonomic plane as Kryten from Red Dwarfs head, I believe that the bamberweenie vectorplotter has been discomknockerated to allow the Crossflow to countermand the hemispheritickleating whottsit.

My partner bought one when changing his BMW 5 series. Absolutly loves it. BM was a problem car (as were the other 3 we have had) He was so impressed he took it round to the BM gagage we use to show them. They were impressed as well[msnsmile2][msnsmile2] Price for kit level was superb. Its the CRD so he's had it chipped, improved performance, but more importantly fuel consumption, as he does over 35000 miles a year.
