this is probably a silly question, but i'm going to ask it anyway

when eating out would i have any problems with ordering a childs meal for an older person? (teenager)

both of my children have issues with food and i don't really want to be paying for an adult priced meal for a teen who will not eat it and would much prefer a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or the chicken tenders that often appear on the childrens menu

on our last trip my daughter was 11 and we had no problem but now she is older and much bigger (almost as tall as me!) i wondered if i will have a problem

i have read elsewhere that servers are usually ok with you doing this but would really like your advice and experience on the subject

thanks

Mizzy

when we were over in Feb my daughter who is 11 but really quite tall for her age often wanted to order from the childrens menu and we had no problems however some servers did look twice.
When we went the year previously my Mum did try and order off the childrens menu as she has a small appetite but the server was not too happy with this[msncry]

another option mizzy is to order a starter as a main course or just some side dishes or share. they are always fine with us if one person isnt too hungry

Why not order an adult meal and ask for another plate so you can share some of yours and then go for sweets to fill up if they like them, We always did that with one of our children as he was a poor eater and left an adult meal ,Thats the way we got round being charged and had to leave a lot of food we had paid for .

I would just ask the server and explain that your daughter doesn't see anything on the regular menu that she likes. They may ask you for a small surcharge or they might just say it's fine.

I had the fussiest son when it came to food (now 25 and is now his girl-friend's problem!) and he used to eat from a Denny's menu some sort of toasted ham and cheese sandwich, the name escapes me.

Why not try off a Senior's Menu or as others have said share a plate. I am surprised that servers have questioned a teenager for ordering a child's menu what has happened to the 'anything goes' culture?

All day breakfasts might be another approach.

No child will starve itself so I often just gave up with my son it was such a struggle to get him to eat.

Hi Mizzy

I've always ordered off the kids menu for my son, at home or abroad as he doesn't have a large appetite.

There is only one restaurant where he ever requests an adult portion and that's only because he loves venison.

We've never had a problem with the servers who are always more than happy to accomodate.

My wife has a small appetite and often ordered a kids portion this holiday. Some places (Bahama Breeze) do a 'lighter' portion.

Hi Mizzy

If you ask for both a childs menu along with an adults then you can take your pick. We did this everywhere this year with my son who is 13 and sometimes like to eat the usual chicken fingers and chips etc., but sometimes like to opt for a bigger portion.

You can always leave with a 'to go' box and enjoy any left overs later[msnwink]

Hi Mizzy

Over the last couple of weeks Danielle who is 14 was ordering some of the time from the children's menus and then sometimes from the adults.

Emma who is 16 was just ordering starters mainly for her main meal and then on other occasions the girls ordered seperate starters but then shared a main course.

Not one of the restuarants minded at all.

Hi Mizzy,

My daughter is 14 but doesn't have a large appetite. We've never had a problem in ordering smaller meals either from the children's menu or starter menu's. Often my daughter just has 2 starters. Sometimes I have shared main courses with her and most places will gladly bring an extra plate.
Another bonus of living in a villa is 'boxing' meals - if the meals are too large we often box half and take it home for lunch the next day!

I do not eat a lot and have often asked for a childs meal. I have never had any problems with this. IHOP often ask charge an extra dollar as they say they do not make a profit on a childs meal? Not sure I believe it but do not mind paying the dollar as I do not like wasting a lot of food.

The only time you cannot do this is when you go for a buffet meal. Any other meal you can order exactly what you want. In the places where the potions are huge ie Cheesecake factory, Bahama Breeze etc. my s-i-l and I only order 2 appetizers and ask them to put them in the middle with 2 extra plates. This is all we want. We remember to tip well and always make sure that we are very pleasant a to the server.
