Please think about this. Flying is one of the safest forms of transport. You will miss out on so much if you carry on thinking this way.
Think of the wonderful time you will have in Florida and the memories you will have.

We are going in 2 weeks and wouldnt dream of cancelling it. We take just as much risk every day going out in a car (my husband averages a couple of hundred miles a day on some of the souths worst motorways, and if anything the airlines should be safer now than ever,
Just try and relax and look forward to the break.

Couldn't agree more I drive over 30,000 miles a year and I feel safer in an aircraft than on the M6.
We fly with our children on the 24th Aug and cannot wait. Even a little bit of inconvenience at check in cannot dampen the enthusiam for the fantastic time we will have whilst we are in Florida.
Jaff
It is an understandable reaction however on reflection it is even safer now than it was 7 days ago

We flew back from Orlando on the day it all was announced and had absolutely no problems at all. It really was a non-event and nothing to worry about. The lack of hand luggage was a bit of a nuisance at first but to be honest it meant I actually had some sleep rather than sat there fiddling with my iPod etc etc.
Go enjoy your holiday - I'm sure you will have a fab time and look back on your worries and wonder why you were so worried.
To answer the question - Are you scared of flying now? No I'm not!
I could go out in my car and be the victim of road rage (the way I drive this is quite possible!!), or have an accident. I could go by boat or ferry and be the victim of a collision at sea. I could go by train and have it de-railed. I could walk down the street and be knocked down...!
Alternatively I could stay at home, never go anywhere and still be the victim of an accident. I believe most accidents happen in your own home.
We're flying out to Florida early September and I can't wait!!

flying is the safest form of travel
paul one or more than two people will have your thoughts and quite rightly so but you just have to check out the stats - we are actually looking to go out next week now -you will be fine.
ps. if you do cancel (and feel free) let me know cos the insurance company wont reimburse you... i'll give £50 a ticket[msnwink]:D:D

PAUL you are letting them win and that is what they want ,We flew after 9/11 and via ATLANTA and the people in AMERICA all pull together and everthing the the airport told us to do we all complied and the staff at ATLANTA said thankyou for helping at this time .
You are missing a lovely time in FLORIDA and if it is the first it will not be the last as we all have found this out its MAGIC .Have a lovely holiday .

Paul, don't be such a wimp. You are more likely to be killed crossing the road than in an air accident. Why on earth let some miserable terrorists spoil your holidays. Remember you won't get a refund on your tickets or you accommodation just because you are scared, why lose out.

Because of the recent arrests, improved intelligence and enhanced security, flying today is safer than it was a few days ago.
Enjoy your trip!

Sorry to go off at slight tangent here John (can't DM you) but are Virgin prohibiting hand luggage and electrical devices on flights from the US as well?

We go away on Tuesday and have no worries what so ever, it is safer flying today than it was last week, dont them win.
HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY AND BRING BACK ALL THEM MEMORIES[msncool]
The US are doing the same with hand luggage as us. May well become the norm I think!
Have a good holiday - still more likely to win the jackpot on the lottery than have an incident in a plane!!

am i scared of flying now?
absolutely not
Mizzy
Me and the good wife fly out week on thursday (24th) and to be honest I feel better about it than before, why do we get in a panic about flying 2-3 times a year and think it will happen to us! Think of the cabin crew on board the plane, they do it just about every day as a job, if its ok for them its sure ok for us. :)
I absolutely agree with what everyone else has posted here....just go and enjoy you're holiday and don't let it worry you.

I'm more or less certain that they're not Joyce, which is why I asked the question.

No - they allow hand luggage as long as it does not contain any liquids or gels. I'm not sure about electronics but they did allow my bass guitar so maybe electrics are allowed. I did not see anyone with an iPod but we were up front so only saw about 10 passengers for the whole flight [msnsmile2].

Thanks for taking the time to reply John - that's good news I feel.
I read either another thread or an airline site they were so its good if not the case. Could be that it has been airline dependent.

I know they do. We phoned Virgin first thing in the morning US time as we were checking in at Downtown Disney and then spending our last day at the parks. They had not long heard the news so said that no hand luggage was allowed - this was relaxed by the TSA later in the day but by this time it was too late for us as we'd packed it all in our cases and checked it all in.

I would have no hessitation flying now. I can understand why it makes people think twice especially nervous flyers, but when you think rationally about your fears, there will never be a safer time to fly.
I am going to London tomorrow to see Chicago and I have to say I find that more worrying, with all those people and no security, but I would never let them stop me going about my life.

Definately not put off flying by any of this.
At the end of the day any determined and mentally unstable person can do any number of things to cause trouble in the air, and can make explosives from the most simple, readily available products - many of which are in your kitchen or bathroom right now.
The fact is they don't because of the practicalities involved getting them onto a plane due to the already stringent security checks.
Pegasus
PS - How long will it be do you think before a News of the World 'reporter' (and I use the term loosely) tries to smuggle a bottle of water with 'something' in it - just to highlight problems in security [msnmad]

I am flying on Friday and would never consider not travelling, I think you have made the right decision Pul and when you are larging it up in Florida next month you will wondering why you ever considered cancelling.
Have a great trip.[8D]
Think of it this way, with the heightened security at present it will be a safer time to fly at the moment because the airlines/authorities are being extra vigilant.
Enjoy the holiday and try to relax (hard I know).
No threats and certainly no terrorist will ever stop me flying, I have been flying all my adult life and will never stop, its a love and a passion and not something I will ever stop doing - so all you terrorists can get lost because you don't frighten me!!!!!
Sorry about the large text! I have just just flown back to the Uk today and feel very strongly about the weeks events.
The fear of an incident happening while flying is also a slightly misplaced fear - after the unfortunate events of 9/11 the number of people that died in road traffic accidents in America increased such that there were more additional RTA deaths per day than the number that died in the actual attacks. The increased traffic levels were due primarily to the general fear of flying.

I flew to Orlando 9 days after sept 11th and as I usually have a fear of flying-that fear evaporated as I was determined noone or nothing would put me off my well deserved holiday.
I go back in just under 4 weeks-yeah!
