My friends are going to Orlando and are thinking about driving down to Key West does anybody know how long is the driving time?
Thanks
It's around 400 miles each way so at least 6 - 8 or more hours, depending on how many stops you make so it's at least an overnight trip and probably two nights if you want to have a good look around Key West.

We did Key west last year from Orlando Airport, we stopped overnight as soon as we arrived as it was quite late on the space coast, and then took the highway 1 all the way down to the keys early the next morning, we arrived about 6 or 7.00pm that night, and spent 5 days in the keys, and loved every minute of it, We will be going back again hopefully next year, but being as we have done the driving bit and seen the bridge etc, we will be flying in this time, to spend more time in keys.

You can also do the relatively short drive to Fort Myers and get the ferry to Key West. Certainly easier than the drive down to Miami and route 1 across the keys.

It's still getting on for 200 miles to Fort Myers and then you have to drop the car off and get to the port by taxi.
The sea trip is a great way to get to Key West but the 9.00 am sailing times don't fit in well with a drive from Orlando without an overnight hotel stop. As a result, it isn't a cheap or convenient option.

I know its a long way back, especially if you get lost and come back via Miami like we did[msnembarrased]
If took us 4 - 5 hours using the Turnpike last year to get to Key Largo, this was with one stop for a toilet break. I would add a least another 2 hours on top of your journey for Key Largo to Key West.
We did this trip when we were over in June. It took about 7 hours from our villa at Hampton Lakes to get down to Islamorada. Stopped there overnight and then drove down to Key West which took about another hour and 15 minutes.
We have done this a couple of times now and Key West is certainly worth a visit.
Good thing about taking the turnpike is there loads of places to stop and have something eat & drink

We did this one year, left around 7.00am in the morning and was in Orlando by 4.00 and we had stopped for something to eat.

We stayed at the HoJo in Key Largo, at mile marker 102. That means 102 miles to the foot of Key West. We drove to Key West and with the various speed limts I recall it took around 3 hours.
Nice drive, but of course as soon as you stop to admire the scenery or top up your gulps, it's more time before you reach your destination.

It's quite a long journey as others have said and this is due in part to the speed limits when you get down there, it gets down to snails speed on some of the route.

Some friends of mine flew direct from Orlando. Took them about 50 mins. Not sure which airline they used but it could be an option if you dont fancy the long drive
Do what we did, which I think would be only possible if you fly Virgin. Fly into Miami drive down is easy to Key Largo and takes about one & half hours. Then fly back from Orlando, can quote exact driving time as we went to Clearwater first before heading to Orlando following week. The drive from Key Largo to Clearwater was a doddle four & half hours and that included a stop. Mind you there was a storm in Miami when we should of landed so were diverted to Fort Lauderdale and then endured a four & half wait sitting on the runway before we flew back to Miami, in this situation it would of been quicker to drive from Orlando.

My friends called me today saying that it took them just over 8 hrs, they drove all the way down on Highway 27 until they hit Miami. He said he's knackered!
P.S THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLYS[clap]
