Hi

We arrive in sanford at 14.20 on a Saturday. We then have to get to our hotel on International Drive. We can get transfers off our holiday company for £120 return. There are 4 of us, would it be cheaper and possible to just get a taxi outside the airport? We havent been before so dont know whether this is possible and easy enough or whether it would be much cheaper. any help would be great.

Do none of you drive?

Car hire for a week from this site is £121, this would give you greater freedom for the rest of your holiday.

Yes we drive, we get a free car with our holiday but are not using it due to the hassle of taking the extra insurance and worrying about driving around etc. We would just find it far less trouble if we came out of the airport, straight into a car and onto the hotel. We are right on International Drive and wont be venturing too far away from the main parks on this visit.

For future reference, cars booked through this site come complete with all the insurance you need.

If you are not going to drive then i would take up the tour operators offer of £120 for the return trip.

I know you are one of many that don't want to drive and we were the same 20 years ago ,but in all honesty it reall'y is no hassle and it does give you a freedom you never get without a car.

If you have never been to Florida before then I understand how you feel, but why not get the car once you are settled in your hotel? I am sure you can pick up the car from I Drive if you book through this site and its fully inclusive[clap]

You will miss so much without a car as everything is spread out[msnsmile]

Take the car, take the car!

Honestly, the driving is not difficult and you will miss out on a lot by not having a car. I can't imagine being in Orlando without one.

I'll bet you spend more on taxis than the insurance would cost.

Yeah -at the risk of being patronising-I can't even imagine getting around without a car-we're going in August (10 of us) and we've got 2 a big one and a compact but it's still cheaper than taxis. One thing to consider is that you can come out of some of the parks quite late, particularly if you've stayed for fireworks etc. and the thought of having to search for a cab at the end of a long busy day-fills me with dread. Now to the patronising bit-the distances are enormous (cf with UK) so even getting around I Drive is not as easy as it sounds, plus all the cars are air conditioned and believe me you need it if you are traipsing from shop to shop-I think that most people on this site (not that I've met anybody) would recommend a car-If it's included why not get it and then decide on the level of use you want to make of it?

There is another point to check up on before you decide to do this - I seem to remember this being discussed before, but isn't there some financial penalty from your tour operator if you don't take the car?

sometimes there is a fee if you don ' t take the car " independent travellers fee " but having been in both situations , that is with and without the car ,if you are just in i -drive it is possible not to drive , but then we do universal not disney which would not be as handy, having said that, 99.9% of the time we do take a car just so we can please ourselves , its up to yuo really:)

Right ok. I have always wanted to take the car, the girlfriend didnt but now we are having a rethink. Direct Holidays say that we get the car for free with insurance but i seem to remember that this site said that you must upgrade your insurance, is that true? If so do i just phone Direct and do it through them? I cant ring them now as they closed at 8pm.

Also is it pretty easy to get from Sanford to the hotel?

Thanks again

Before we bought our villa, we booked a villa with Direct holidays. The "free" car, once you have paid to upgrade to one that actually suits your party size and paid the insurance actually worked out more expensive than booking the exact car we wanted fully inclusive of all insurances.

We just phoned Direct holidays and told them that we would not be taking the "free car" and had no problems whatsoever. At the time I didnt know about this site and the great prices on car hire so could have saved myself even more.

If I was you I would book the car hire from this site and take the gold insurance and Bob's your Uncle[msnwink]

I agree with Karen, book your own car hire through the above link it will probably work out cheaper than the insurance for the "free" car.
I had been travelling to Florida for 14 years before I ventured behind the wheel of the car ( I always let my hubby do the driving)It is a big regret, driving is so easy and gives you so much independance.
After a fantastic but exceptionally tiring day in the parks you will be glad that you can just jump in your car and go back to base rather than having to wait for a bus!!!
If your girlfriend needs any persuasion tell her you will be able to explore the shopping opportunities a lot more easily [msnwink]

Hi
If your hotel does transfers to the parks then you really don't need a car. As this is your first time you really won't have that much time to do lots of driving around as I guess most of your days will be spent at the parks. Also you can get on and off the trolly that travels up and down I Drive for $2 per trip or even buy a mulit trip card that works out cheaper. The trolley takes you to both the Premium malls and Prime mall at each end of I drive. Lots of our friends who prefer to stay on I-drive don't take a car as they feel they don't need it.
ps. we always take a car but we stay at our villa

Sorry got my information wrong. the price of the trolley is $1 per ride, $3 for a day ticket, 7 days is $9 and 14 is $16 and kids go free.

I personally would take the car from this site. The very first time we went (14 yrs ago)I was filled with dread about driving over there. But, you kow what? I would rather drive there than over here!! It is very easy once you get used to it, most of the roads are dual carriagways and everyone does seem to drive slower than we do on our moterways. I have spoken to people who have used shuttle buses and taxis and it was 1. Expensive and 2. You are governed to pick up times with shuttle buses and the hassle of getting taxis. Don't forget that the Disney parks are a good 15 - 20 mins from I drive.

Just take the economy car or the compact and that should be adequate for your first trip. You can save the 4 x 4 or convertable for next trip![msnwink]

For the first couple of trips I didn't drive because of the same reason, too daunting.

Once I plucked up the courage I have to say it has become part of my holiday, I really love to drive around Florida.
It is so much more relaxing than the UK.
I now can't wait to pick up the car from the airport and cruise down the 417 or I-4 towards my holiday home :)

It's a haul from Sanford to International Drive. I'd guess at least a $70-$100 cab ride. Sanford is in North Seminole County. International Drive is South Orange County.
I live here. Belive me, you need a car. If for nothing else, to go to the supermarket or the Mall. And with a car you can take breaks while in the partks.

Enjoy..............

Take a car and drive,no roundabouts till you hit the one in Miami. It's much easier than driving in the UK and you can go visit places other than the theme parks,Flight of Fantasy for one is brilliant.

Just one more thing...you do get maps with your hire car.
