How much extra are the fast passes for the parks. :)

They are free Andrew.
You just take your park entrance ticket to a fastpass machine by the ride you want to go on and the machine will give you a fastpass for that ride which states the time you can return. You return at the allocated time (usually a one hour window) and get to jump the queue :D.
that sounds easy
Does every park operate this scheme? :)

All 4 of the Disney Parks do. I'm sure Universal operate a similar scheme - perhaps someone else can confirm this?
Universal have a Fast Pass for Terminator 3D, Back to the Future, Men in Black, Betelguese Graveyard Review and the Wild West Show. They may have them for other rides as well but I can't remember. :D:D
Islands of Adventure have them for the two Water Rides, Hulk, Spiderman, and Jurassic Park. Plus others which again I can't remember!! :D:D
(It's old age and dry rot getting the better of my grey cells!!)

IOA have them for Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish, Carousel, Poseidon's Adventure, Sinbad, Duelling Dragons, Unicorn, Jurassic Park, Triceratops Encounter, Dudley DoRight, Popeye, Spiderman, Hulk, That spinning thing (can't remember its name) and Dr Doom - in fact almost anything you might care to do in the park.
Universal is similar - I think every ride has an express pass now.

Andrew, before you use your fast pass (or equivalent), check out the normal wait time first (these are posted on all of the big rides). I think that you can only have one fast pass at a go and the time that we were going to use it, the wait time was only 10 minutes whereas the time to come back under the fast pass was six hours later!.

Yo can now have more than one fast pass at a time at Disney. The time you can get another one is shown on each fast pass:D:D
Another good tip (following on from Ruth) is to get your next fast pass running before you ride this one. It took us 2 days to work out that if your window for ride 1 was 2 - 3, and your next fast pass could be taken at 2:15 - it was better to get a new fast pass at 2:15, then ride on the first fast pass, so that when you come off the first ride it's almost time to ride the second one
Easier to do than to explain, but last May we hardly had to wait for anything!;)

We also complained to a cast member about the wait times for Buzz Lightyear in the Magic Kingdom and were given some 'special' fastpasses we could use right away to take a ride...that's service at it's very best :D.

We always go just before Christmas.....we've never waited for any ride.....:D
Each ride only has a certain number of fast passes per day, then the fast pass is closed down. So don't leave it too late to get your fast pass. We did and the fast passes had already closed.

Fast passes today at the parks were running a 3 hour wait!! My 2 sons went to 2 parks today and went on about 8 rides in total. For the Speed track at Epcot the fastest way is to go in the single riders lane. You usually end up in the same car anyway.
As Jeff said, the Fastpasses are limited as they can only give ride times up until the parks close.
Splash Mountain in Magic Kingdom often runs out by around 2pm and last June, the Express Tickets (Universal's version) for Spiderman in IOA had run out by 12pm.
The best thing to do is work out which rides you want to go on and whether they are the most popular. Then get passes for them before you go on anything else.
just come back this weekend and we were very disappointed with both universal parks fast passes as the main rides such as spiderman, hulk, and rip saw falls in IOA and men in black in universal were fully distributed by 11.30 am however you could purchase a fast pass plus for $25 in IOA which gave you 1 fast pass to all 14 rides/shows and as we got such a good deal on flexi park tickets [via orlando park tickets link on this site] we paid this on our 2nd day as the wait times were 60 mins+ also you are still able to use your main ticket for fast pass
You were unlucky Jotter and went at an incredibly busy time - around 4th July!

We will be going in late April (10 days after Easter) to mid-May. I have heard that crowds will be thinner then and quite often FPs are unnecessary. Also, people say this is the best time weatherwise as there is a lot of sun without being too hot and thunderstorms are unlikely. Can someone confirm this please?
that is my fav time to go weather is just right and not too busy providing spring break kids have gone back. only down side is the love bugs

Jotter, I am either too dumb or too old to have missed this one, but what exactly do you mean by "love bugs"?

Love bugs-are the small flying isects that go around in twos-hence the name. They are more of a nuisance than anything else.

Here's a picture of some lovebugs on the porch of the villa we stayed in last year:

Oh, that's OK then. No one in our group is particularly bothered by insects, coming from where we do. Thanks.

Jotter, you said you purchased the flexi park tickets and then purchased the fast pass plus on the 2nd day for $25. I was under the impression that fast pass plus had to be purchased along with the regular ticket. Am I misinformed or has that changed? I'd love to know how this works because I'll be there with a pre-paid ticket in November and I'd be more than willing to purchase a fast pass plus if I'm able to. Thanks!
