Hi All,
I enquired through this site about satnav for my April visit to Orlando, only to find they were all booked out. So I decided to treat myself to a TOMTOM Go 300, I also bought a southeast usa map from tomtom for £40. My questions is for all you veteran satnavvers is,
1/ Can POI's databases(points of interest) be transfered between users?
2/ Has anyone got any that they would be willing to share?
3/ Am I being naive in thinking this can be done?
4/ Will the maps show me the major parks, malls and eating places?
HELP appreciated!!!!

POI databases can be shared, although not sure what extra you would need. Most parks are on them but I found we had to adjust teh position of just about everyone one. Eating places are on but you will find they are listed all under the same name (i.e. 7 of the same name) so its hard to distwinguish which one you need, so again we had a special trip to make re adjust.

We used our Tom Tom on our last trip and the parks, Malls and restuarants are already pre-programmed on my system. Dont know what other POI you would require.
Hi Kevin,
I'm looking at buying a TomTom one and wanted a map of just Florida, but on the TomTom site, they only advertise a map of the whole of America at $169. How did you get one for just the south east?

Try this link
http://www.tomtom.com/plus/services/mds.php
when you scroll down all the maps should be visible, the maps are for download to your computer and are quite large (225MB)luckily I was able to download to pen drive on my works computer (fast 450 kb/sec took 7 minutes)
Please let me know how you get on
Kev
Thanks for that Kevin. I found the map. I was looking at the SD cards before, didn't know about downloading. That will save me £60. Hoping to buy the TomTom One before we go to Florida in May.
Ian
I am in the process of buying a Tom Tom Go 700. Are these the ones hired out by this site? Are the US maps specially programmed by Martin or John & Roger for the TT available for purchase. If not I do know that Amazon [u]were</u> doing them at what seemed a reasonable price.

I have have done some digging for info to try to make my own POI's, Google earth, I have found is great for making POI's "points of interest" for my TomTom go. If you put pins on all your favouite places in Florida, save them as *.kml files and get a poi converter program free on the net to convert them to OV2 files and just save the to your florida map on the TOMTOM
Just had a great deal on the TOMTOM GO 910 £288, can,t wait to start using it.

Ian you can just purchase the Southern States for about £40. We bought these last year and are great for the Tom Tom. Look on the Tom Tom site. You can download them from their site.
We bought our Tom Tom from Gatwick Airport. It came complete with maps of UK and US and is great.
Sandra
Just pre-programmed in all the places we want to visit, while we are over there, so hopefully no hassle.

I was just looking at the Tom Tom 910 on the link above and it says the USA and Europe maps are loaded on hard drive. How do you know how up to date these maps are or can you do free updates?

All maps should be as of 2006, don,t know about free updates but if you raise the question on the tomtom site, i am sure you should find the answers.

there are many downloadable POI's available from the net just do a google
I have downloaded many before, likes of banks, and mainly fast food chains McDonalds / Burger Kings / Dennys etc
I would imagine the majority of what you will actually require will already be within the TOM TOM unit though anyway so the downloads possibly unnecessary
the only useful one I may suggest could be the speed limits / cameras database similar to the one for the UK which is excellent and a must have in the UK
I have no idea if an equivalent like this is available in the US though
Hi all,
If you are looking for POI's for the states then this site is excellent - Pocket GPS World (you have to register with the site to download the POI's - FREE). The page can be a little slow.
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=POIs
Here you can download all kinds of POI's and it gives you a guide on how to get them on your TOMTOM via your computer. We have a TOMTOM 910 and use this site for all our UK POI's and intend to use it when we go out to FLA next year. The POI's are updated regularly by anyone who is a member. They also include updated speed cams for the UK but you have to pay £2 to get those. They're easy enough to find on Google for free! ;)
Anyone has any probs getting the POI's then mail me.

I got the Go910 in December 06 and since then Tomtom have released a new set of maps. I checked on their site and you can get the upgrade for $6, All i had to do was input my serial number on the upgrade screen then they gave me the $6 price.
Depending on where you buy it, it may have the older map or the newest ones, it will depend on how old the stock is.
The good thing about the Go910 is that everything is on the hard drive, no card to use. All maps for US and Europe are included and loaded also, so you can use it here and in UK.

Thanks for the info Neil & Kay. I am a competant map reader myself and always plan my route in advance when I haven't been there before and if I have, I remember the way, but hubby is looking into getting one. At least he will have someone else to yell at if they are not quick enough with the directions [msnwink]

As a side line but still Sat Nav related, I received my new Nokia N95 mobile phone this week, which comes with SAT Nav built in
Seems to work great once it detects your position, and better still includes maps of over 100 countries including the US
have checked out the Florida area on it and all looks upto date and pretty impressive
Found our villa location no problem from street address and Davenport
may be a reasonable alternative for those looking for sat nav option

I must say that I used to do an awful lot of driving (work related) across England and Europr, and have a pretty good sense of direction wherever I am , North being North etc
Never beleived I would find a use for sat nav, but do love a gadget
having added sat nav to my pda around 3 years ago now , they are fantastic
yes you see people with them on , when they are just on their way home WHY ??(each to their own)
But my wife and I have used them considerably accross Europe on holidays, and they certainly remove that very stressfull situation of when you go slightly off route shall we say, with everyone looking to blame someone else
the majority of the journey is never really a problem but its always those last 10 minutes or 5 miles, when your so close that this tends to happen
Nothing worse than when you are not quite sure of an area , which turn to take, how much further, and for these situations they are invaluable
And the added POI's (points of interest) are a real bonus when you are needing somewhere to eat / drink / cashpoint / or worst case (and all of us do it) a petrol station at short notice
