Hi

I have seen mention of Mount Dora on the forum. Can anyone tell what's there and any directions from Championsgate?

Thanks

Julie

Mount Dora is a small town which seems to be caught in a time warp and is lovely to spend a day wandering around the shops, stopping off for a coffee or a beer, having a meal. It is such a laid back place you cannot help but relax. There is a beautiful lake and a number of nature trails and cycle tracks. It's really worth a visit and is one of our favourite places.
It's easily reached along the US441 about 45 minutes drive time from Kissimmee - I'm sure one of the villa owners will post on here the best route from Champions Gate

We intend to go to Mount Dora on our trip next month, haven't been before but it has been recommended a few times by other Florida addicts.[msnsmile]

With the cycle tracks in mind is there anywhere you can hire bikes there? Really enjoyed our family bike rides in California so would like to do more of the same when we get back to good ol florida.

We visited last week for the first time and really enjoyed it. Definitely somewhere we will go back to. Didn't notice any cycle tracks but you can hire a Segway (those two wheeled motorised things that Disney staff use in the car parks) and do a tour of the town so presumably no reason why you couldn't cycle the same route. There are lots of things to do there and they have a regular programme of events.

We got there by driving up the 27, turning off onto the 19 and then onto the 441. It is very well sign posted.

There is a website for information but it is not possible to post it here. I'm sure if you search on Google for Mount Dora you will find it or DM me.

Julie, I'll ask my next guests how they decide to do it. They live in Mt Dora and are coming to Lake Wilson Preserve next week. I did an online search to find the route and it takes about an hour to us.

We just love Mount Dora - great for wandering around and stopping off for a drink. Just go onto Mapquest with your address and they will give you a step by step guide - all free - even better.

Have a great time to all those who plan to visit.

when we went in October, Mount Dora had a craft festival on, there were stalls everywhere and the town was heaving, seems to be a major event, mostly seemed to be locals as well, didnt notice too many Brits wandering around.
Well worth the visit if you get the chance.

There is also a train which runs a couple of times a week which is worth doing. Hubby rode with the guard and he was telling him that there had been no maintenance on the track for about 50 years[msnscared][msneek] good ride through, had a running comentary from the guard which was quite funny.

We went September last year, had a fab lunch...far too much (very good) wine and a stroll round the quaint shops. Bought some Christmas tree decorations and had a wonderful day. We just went up H27 as we are over that way

We visited in April, it was only an hour's drive from the US27. A beautiful quaint town, they call it 'the New England of Florida'.We ate lunch at Pisces Rising which serves the most succulent fish dishes. This is the little train that takes you around Lake Dora - which is in the distance. The driver reminded me of Casey Jones:

Later in the day we went to the Lakeside Hotel - they have 'Happy Hour' after 4pm. It was like stepping back in time as you walked in. We sat on the veranda in rocking chairs which overlooked the lake in the distance. Segways Tours are available - we might try that next time we visit.

It's a nice day out and about an hour from Champions Gate, very straightforward to get to. We drove over in May and it is a pleasant afternoon out. The trip on the train is obligitory and watch out for the "rare tree";)

How is it for kids?

It is a good chill out day for the kids, in between more hectic days at the parks, etc. There is a lake and lots of interesting shops. Plenty of open space for them to run around and let off steam. Last time we were there we were having a drive around and stumbled across the entrance to Palm Island Park. This is a nature walk and now on our must do list for next time as it looks lovely. From Champions Gate it is now really easy to get to Mount Dora, just take toll road 429, which is one exit North from the Champions Gate exit (I think from memory - this is a new extension to 429, so may not appear on maps or Sat Navs). Stay on 429 all the way up to 441, and turn left onto 441. About 40 minutes drive time.
