I am looking for an ADSL modem so I do not have to keep going up to the top of the house to get my emails

What requires you to go to the top of the house to read email? Do you already have ADSL or are you planning to get it installed?

Maybe you are thinking about a wireless LAN. ;)
I have an ADSL WAP router which enables us to use our laptops all over the house and in the garden. A router give you better throughput with most ADSL connections as well, so the speed is not an issue as the wireless LAN runs at 11Mbs and most home ADSL connections are only 512k download/256k upload.
Cost a bit (£250) to setup but it is cetainly better than sitting in our study all the time and it means that we can both connect to our work over VPN connections when "working" from home.[}:)]
