The best I have found so far is Nationwide Building society
currently $1.62 for both Cash and Cheques. Not sure if anyone
has found better

Hi

We've just received 1.62 as well from Yorkshire Bank.

Looked at a lot of Travel Agents rates, but not as good.

I opened a Nationwide Flex account just for their exchange rates. I have just got back from the USA, I used ATM's to get cash on the debit card they charge no fee and the rate is very good (I was there from the 14/6 to 2/7 and the exchange rate varied from 1.66 to 1.68, you get the bulk exchange rate for the date of transaction).

I also have a Nationwide credit card for purchasing goods services atc.; the rates are the same as the debit card and again no commission charges.

Tiny, those rates are good. Are you telling me that if you hold an account with them that they give you the commercial rate rather than the tourist rate?

I just got 1.608 from the Post Office last week and it's COMMISSION FREE :)

Of course it had been higher the week before, but I wasn't organised enough then.

Hi Mat

I can confirm those rates for Nationwide. Certainly the best deal I've found. Just come back from our villa and like tiny got between 1.66 and 1.68 on ATM (£2.50 cash advance fee) and on purchases with no fee.

Matt,

Yes, you do get the commercial rate with absolutely no commission if using the debit card for cash withdrawals.

28 June 2003 Cash Partners Feder/2000 Gene ANAHEIM. 200.00USD at 1.660
Withdrawal date 27 June 2003 £120.45

The NW visa card also offers the same exchange rate, but a 1% cash handling fee (£1 minimum fee) is levied for cash withdrawals.

17 June 2003 WAL MART FOOTHILL RANC CA
91.85US DOLLAR at 1.68254259. £54.59

20 June 2003 CHEVRON #00096969 RIALTO CA
15.00US DOLLAR at 1.65929203. £9.04

As you can see I have cut and pasted a couple of examples from my online statements.

IMHO if you travel abroad more than a couple of times a year it is well worth opening a NW Flex account.

I can vouch too for using a Nationwide card if you have a flex account and even better, we don't get charged for using some of the ATM machines :D.
