View Full Version : IPOD Radio Wave Gadget ?
I'm over in Florida in a few weeks time and a friend has asked me to look out for a gadget that allows the IPOD to be played through an FM Radio ?? You connect the gadget to your IPOD and then tune your radio in the car, at home, in the office etc to a specific channel and Bingo the IPOD plays music through this channel.
Anyone know what I am looking for, how much it costs and where I can get it from ??

The Griffin iTrip sounds like the one. They are illegal in the UK and so you cannot buy them here.
I used to have one but found it was a pain as you have to find a free frequency and then set it to broadcast on that. If you are going on anything but a local trip you may well find a radio station on the way or at your destination uses the frequency you choose and so as you progress on your journey you get increasing levels of interference from the local radio stations.
It's apparently good fun to use it to hi-jack next door's Radio 2 listening with any song you like from your iPod - so I have heard [msnwink].

If he needs the IPOD version then an apple store or large pc store would be best. Walmart used to stock the cheaper belkin versions. Its a gadget that plugs into the headphone jack and transmits on an fm frequency. Althopugh I dont think they are legal in the UK due to the emergency services using a similar frequency...

They just use the standard FM frequencies but it's illegal to broadcast on FM frequencies without a radio licence in the UK and so they are not sold in the UK.

John is right that they are officially illegal in the UK. However, they only broadcast with a tiny range of 10-20ft, so we have found one very useful at home, and our daughter has been able to listen to the same tracks if she drives at a normal distance behind us.
It is easier to find a clear radio band in the UK than it is in the USA where virtually every band is taken.
The iTrip is such fun. Try it at an Apple Store in Millenia or the Florida Mall, next time you are over.

I ditched mine in the end and went for a proper in-car cradle (like one of the mobile phone ones) that is hardwired into the back of the car stereo system and is just perfect, regardless of local radio stations. I've more than had my money's worth out of this and really enjoy the flexibility of listening to any of my CD's anytime I am driving.

I tried the Griffin and also ditched it, but I got a cradle that plugs into the cig lighter and auto plays through the radio and auto tunes too - got it from the Apple Store at Millenia Mall in Orlando[msnwink]
Well now I know... will inform my 'friend' immediately [msnsad]
Thanks guys
There is also a Road Trip available which plugs into the cigarette lighter in your car and charges your ipod at the same time as playing your tunes through an FM station. It is a lot more powerful and it is done digitally so is a lot easier to use. It also remembers which frequency you are on whereas you have to do the itrip each time. It is more expensive but is far better.
I know they are illegal but as they only transmit a short distance I don't think it is that big a problem.
