Not sure if I'm posting this in the right place - if not, apologies.
I want to buy a digital camera but haven't a clue what I should be looking for or asking for. Can anyone give me a basic digital camera lesson please.
thanks
Jackie
I'd recommend anything that says Nikon or Canon on it.
I know that might sound a smidge flippant Jackie and it's really not meant to; it's just that Nikon and Canon are, arguably, the leaders in digital imaging at the moment. The Nikon Coolpix range is excellent IMHO.
In terms of a different view of how to choose one; the best camera is the one you have with you. If you're just starting out in photograph don't worry too much about how many megapixels the camera has or get blinded by specifications. Ask yourself if it feels comfortable to hold? Is it too heavy to carry around? Will it fit into your pocket, bag or rucksack or whatever else you always carry around with you. Can you switch it on, set a program dial to portrait or landscape or night-time, frame a photo and press the button really naturally.
If you feel comfortable with it you'll take better photos. If you take good photos you'll be enthused to delve more deeply into what the camera can do. When you hit the limits of what it can do, then is the time to start to worry about specifications and megapixels and focal lengths and other technical stuff.
Just got a good deal on a Canon Ixus 40, very neat little pocket size digital camera. It includes charger, battery and small memory card. Most places I have looked have not included the required extras and had to be bought separately. I paid £165, free delivery, from www.cameras2u.com.
I agree with the snapmeister, I have a Nikon coolpix 7Mp. it's very good and not too expensive at about 200 quid, but you can get lower definition ones at about the 130 quid mark, I had the 4mp one last I think and it was spot on too, I'd still have it but I left it in a hotel in Barcelona.[msnembarrased]

i have a fujifilm, for £99 in asda!!! got mine in florida! has video on it as well as making great pics!! suits me!![msnwink]
Having lost our Camera at MGM while in Florida, we purchased a Canon S500 from Bestbuys on OBT. Its the same as a Canon Ixus 700 they just name them differently in the US to the UK. Great Digital Camera.
Many years ago Becs (sorry a bit off topic here, but worth telling) the first time we all went to Florida, we went with my grandparents.
My Grandad bless him had an old Kodak camera, if anyone remembers them it was grey plastic with a bent piece of metal as a shutter and was worth approximately,..nothing as it was at least 20 years old. We offered to get him another as it was an eyesore but no.
Anyway, despite being warned by staff not to take it onto space mountain, he did, and lost it "overboard" as expected. We tried to restrain him but he insisted on reporting it and duly did, being advised to contact lost proprty on leaving the park. We did this but it had not been found. He was gutted but we were secretly pleased and bought him another, decent camera.
12 weeks later, a package arrived at his home, yes you guessed it, beautifully packaged with a lovely letter of APOLOGY on gold foil embossed, and 4 colour letterheaded paper was his camera, duly cleaned and serviced with the film processed and his photographs enclosed.
Won hin him over to the Disney cause for the rest of his life it did. What fantastic customer service and PR.
Thought I'd share that with you. Becs, you never know![msnwink]
Hi Macka
We reported it to Customer Care at MGM, so far nothing as yet but thats 6 months ago now. We lost the camera on the third day, Lookerly we took my laptop and had down loaded the previous days pictures so not that many lost only MGM.
As we were there for a further 2 weeks had no option but to get another camera but it was well worth it the Canon Camera we have now is excellent.
Nice Storey though [clap] They do like to look after you these Disney People

Jackie - I found this old thread with some more info for you. I remembered typing it but couldn't for the life of me find it. Some thoughts about megapixels: http://www.orlando-guide.info/forums/topic_20574.asp

Thanks Steve for the information.
Found a website here in Israel (actually a couple of different ones) where they have auctions every day for all sorts of products and people are bidding and winning for absolutely ridiculous prizes. I watched a bid yesterday for an LCD TV screen worth NIS21,000 (about STG2,650) go for NIS4,000 (STG500)!
Anyway, I diverse, I appreciate the comments and will certainly take your suggestions and guidelines into consideration when I'm buying my camera.
thanks
Jackie
