i am so cross tonight!!!
my daughter Terri left school in the summer, and got a job at boots "temporary" for 4months, today 6 months later they have told all the "temporary workers" that they are being laid off as of the 24th december...................
Happy Christmas!!
not a nice way to treat people?
she loved that job, she was so shy and timid no self confidence, and now a different person!! loves the job very much and very loyal etc! and now feels like shes been kicked in the belly!
she did cry bless her!
more upset as she thought Steve and i would be cross with her, how can we? she didnt get sacked! it was big hugs all round tonight!
any views on this?
The view I think is to tell her she did an extremely good job and it's been a learning curve to her working life and unfortunately the adult world. Tell her she's a much more marketable commodity now in the work place as she has valuable experience behind her. Remind her that she was only employed on an initial 4 month contract and she's exceeeded that by 30 per cent...so obviously they thought a lot more highly of her than she thinks they did!
Extremely upsetting to see your young loved ones getting a lesson in adult life isn't it...big hugs.

Unfortunatly its the norm in these places to take people on for 3/4 months and let you go either xmas eve or early January. She can always reapply for a vacancy that may arise in January, if she is a good worker they may well have a placement.
My sister is a superviser in the pennys/primark here in Dublin, they do the same thing but I know they hand pick who they want to ask back in January as always a couple of vacancies[msnwink]

Sorry to hear this Liesa, not a very nice Christmas Present. To look on the bright side though at least the experience has been a good one and helped to bring her out of herself.[msnsmile2]

Oh Liesa that's bad on Christmas eve so cruel. I know our children have to learn that's the worlds a cruel place. They have to learn to get on with it.
As a parent you want to protect your off springs whatever age they are,
Tell Terri it's their loss. She will soon get another job and a better one
[msnsmile2][msnsmile2]
I totally agree with Barbara's comments - it is their loss and whoever she now finds employment with its their gain. Your daughter is clearly a great asset to any company. Tell her to keep her chin up, something better will come her way. I am a firm believer in fate. Disappointments like this very often lead to better things.

Sorry to hear that Leisa. Although Teri knew it was only temp work Xmas Eve is a bit harsh!
When I was a young pup I worked as a Saturday girl in a High Street Shoes store, I then left school and went to college so could still do the Saturdays and the odd extra hours after college. I then left College and got a decent job but decided to carry on with the Saturday job as I had friends in the store and it was more money.
I was told they had to lay me off because I could not work the extra hours here and there. I was taken on as a Saturday worker so was a bit upset but at 16 well what can you do? They had the audacity to ask me to train up my replacement. I left that night and never went back. They tried to pay me my basic Saturday wage not the 30 hours over time I had done on top (over the Xmas Hols funnily enough), I took my Dad in to the shop with me to sort it out..........money was soon paid.

Leisa, so sorry to hear about Teri, I jope something else comes up for her.
Look on the bright side, CDV said she used to work in a shoe shop and we all know about her fetish for shoes!!! Just be thankful that Teri hasn't worked in Boots too long or she may have developed a tast for goodness knows what [msnwink]

Poor Terri, life can be harsh can't it. One good point though, she is now an experienced worker who can provide references.
Tell Terri to keep her chin up and wish her lot's of luck finding a new job.[grouphug]
the important thing now Leisa is for Terri to carry on doing a profesional job to the best of her ability until the very last minute
lots of companies hire temporary staff in the run up to christmas and then they lay them all of if they need new staff in the folowing year they will pick the best from the temporary workers and usually invite them to apply for the new positions
think about it they have 8 staff all doing pretty reasonable work and they maybe want 2 to work in the new year so they give them all their notice and they learn a lot about them
maturity, commitment and how profesional your Terri's attitude to her work will be what they are looking at over the next few weeks "the pressure period" they call it
i know because i have been in the position as a temporary junior and also as a manager
it sucks but i'm afraid it the norm these days
[grouphug]for your Terri

Thankyou all for your kind words, very comforting, i think Terri is now at a point where they can stick the job, as they have hurt her feelings, she has always been my baby and i hate people being cruel to any of them in life but especially her, i want to wrap her in cotton wool and keep her here with me all the time, but i know that just wont help!
the annoying thing is a new Next store opened very locally to us December 1st and i said "why dont you go there for a job", i know she likes Next things she replied "i am happy where i am , why do i want to change jobs" so they now have all the staff they need,
the indications were for a permanent job, put on the payroll same day as the perm staff, (temporary staff get paid at end of month, Terri's was changed to perm) a discount card was given after 6 months work, (but they withdrew that last week for some reason) now we know why,
(over the last few weeks they had her and other members of the staff traisping through the "churchill square" area of town giving out leaflets dressed up like a billboard, she hated it but still did it!)
she has always done as she was told, never answered back or rude, (its just not in her) thank goodness,
but she wouldnt want to stay there now after this but she is going to speak to her manager who conveniently was away when they were told, till tuesday
but lets hope she finds another job soon, watch this space in 5-10 years from now!!! this will give her a big insight to how things work in the real world,
she may have her own very sucessful business and do very very very well, (and buy her own villa/villas in florida)[msnwink]
well i hope she will.......shes a nice girl someone will want her of that i am sure

shes lovely,
Oh Liesa its so harsh and I agree with all that's already been said.
I am working for a company at the moment who are making a lot of managers and directors redundant before Christmas too they have families to support and mortgages to pay so unfortunately its happens every where[msnsad]
Tell her everything happens for a reason and there must be something better waiting around the corner[grouphug][grouphug]
Leisa, sorry to hear about your daughters job[V], looking at the pics, especially the second one, well doesn't she look like you[msnsmile2]

She must be the same age as my eldest son Liesa, he had a bad experience with a certain sports shop, it was his first job (just Saturdays) and boy did they treat their staff badly. He left after 4 months and the day he handed his notice in he was the longest serving member of staff at that particular store.[msneek] Didn't take him long to find another part-time job and he is really enjoying that.[msnsmile2]
I'm sure Lauren will get another job soon and it will be prove to be a better job than the one she lost.[msnsmile2]
Liesa my 16 y/o has a Sat job at Starbucks and gets treated very well and the pay is £5+ per hour and they get shares and free coffee plus very good discounts on all the merchandise[msnwink]

thanks Julie, think she would prefer another shop like Boots tho,
Sarah its Terri, Laurens got a few years yet, thanks anyway i knew what you meant[grouphug][grouphug][grouphug][grouphug][grouphug]
Liesa my youngest is currently working on a temporary basis for Boots in Reading and they treat her like ****.
The permanent staff ignore all the temps, and if they want to sit down kick them off the tills to do the customer service jobs running around for the customers.
She lost her purse in staff room 2nd day there, got no help from them. We reported it to the police, a week later we get a phone call from someone at Boots saying they had the purse. It appears a manager had found it immediately, locked it up and told no-one. By then all her cards had been cancelled, college card etc. Luckily her train pass was in a pocket in her jacket.
They make them work ridiculous hours - 9 - 6, 12 - 9 and 3-9, she had no training, thrown on the till within an hour of starting.
When my elder daughter worked at WHS they had a day's training - which they were paid in full for, and every week had a pep talk with the manager, who knew them all. She worked there 2½ years before she went to uni.
Anyway, Pips is giving her notice in today, totally fed up with it, and best incentive to work hard at her AS's - the thought of working for them has spurred her on!!
Forgot to say after Pippa's experience sadly it does not surprise me to hear your news. But it is devastating for your daughter. And what a time of year to do it - but typical of a big company with bad management. Hopefully she will find something in the New Year.

thanks again girls, its awful in this day and age tho to be treated in this manner! the kids are our future we need to look after them today, as the saying goes its them who choose your retirement home![msnwink] it just knocks their newly found confidence! Boots should be ashamed of themselves!!!!
Thats a shame, just when she will have settled in. Its good that it has given her confidence though and some experience in customer relations. Lets hope they give her a glowing reference to enable her to get a similar job ASAP, although I suppose just after the Christmas rush is not the best time. I hope it does not spoil her Christmas. Young people are resilient, and I am sure this kick in the teeth, and the down feelings she is having will soon be replaced by Christmas cheer. Chloe

My son had a problem with his summer job this year........he would not work 12 hour days....6 days a week in his school holidays....the guy who owned the place thought he was older....and told us we could not phone in for him to have a day off he'll have to work or lose his job.......so my son walked out taking all the staff with him...........they are all school friends.....the owner can't get any school kids to work there now.......I see the place closing soon....
We have laws about the hours worked by kids....but if its with food.....the hours are still long......but no way should my son be working a full week while still at school.........it give him a lesson about how he will be treated if he does not finish high school.....

Oh LiesaAnne, sorry to hear about her being finished. They use these kids so they don`t have to pay them the extra they have to pay older people and then do this to them. Really felt for her when she thought you would be cross.Hope something comes along for her soon. Just thought does she not fancy taken up some sort of computer course, it seems to be the way to go at the minute.
Mind she will never get on the one at home!!!
I wish her all my luck in finding something.Such a shame when she is so willing to work.
Norma.

Leisa, Maybe if she tries at the Next store after Christmas she will get lucky. A lot of people take on jobs just for a month or so before xmas to earn money and then pack in afterwards. I am sure she will find something soon and at least she now has some experience to put on her cv. Good luck to her anyway. I am sure something will turn up for her.

well now!!!
the next step is, they want to keep Terri on!!!!! (they did ask if she would work boxing day, and she said no, they did ask if she would work for the week after, she said no,) and now they have asked if she would like to stay, they made a mistake, and her superviser i believe didnt know anything about it, someone opened there mouths when they shouldnt have!!!!!
so looks like Terri will stay at Boots, well at least till something better comes along for now!! thankyou all for your kind thoughts and good wishes on this!!![xmas2][xmas2]
Glad they kept her on Liesa. Good for her for refusing to work on Boxing day.
