Went to the Apple Store again today, well it has to be done[msnwink]

Two lads who worked there had an electric guitar and a key board plugged into 'garage band' on an iMac and they were jamming.

My 8 y/o son has been teaching himself to play the electric guitar was offered a go.......well I was blown away he played Deep Purples Across the Water brilliantly and got from [clap][clap][clap] from the whole store!!!!!!!!

We came home plugged an electric guitar into a Powerbook and from the powerbook into our surroud sound B & W speakers and he is there now playing away whithout having to use an amp[msnwink]

Technology and 8 y/o boys are just wonderful[clap][clap]

Those keyboards are great Julie - I still remember Isaac doing a performance on one in the Santa Monica Apple Store last February and getting applauded there [msnsmile2]

We love Garageband too - I do the guitar, Isaac does keyboards and a bit of guitar and Sarah does the vocals. We've had some really fun jamming sessions with it. We usually add in a drum and bass loop or two and have something sounding not too bad at all.

New Macs Yes and only if you have iLife 5, if you have iLife 4 you will have the original garage band[msnwink]

GarageBand 2 was released on Jan 22 2005

"In early 2004, Steve Jobs enthusiastically unveiled GarageBand, a program that gave even musical novices the power to fashion dynamic soundtracks. But as marvelous as GarageBand was, some users were frustrated by the program’s limitations.

Apple has addressed many of the problems with the original release and added some new features that make GarageBand even more musical. Although some features are implemented better than others, GarageBand 2 is a commendable upgrade.

With GarageBand 2’s new Musical Typing feature, you can use your Mac’s keyboard to play notes—and chords.

GarageBand 2 takes some of the burden off your processor by allowing you to lock tracks. When you lock a track, it’s rendered to your hard drive, freeing the processor to devote its attention to other things—like playing and recording more tracks.

GarageBand 2 can simultaneously record as many as eight digital-audio tracks and one Software Instrument track. In my tests with Mark of the Unicorn’s 828mkII audio interface running on a 1.25GHz PowerBook G4, it did just that with nary a hiccup. Musicians who want to record multiple instruments and voices at the same time, will find this feature a real boon.

Inputting music for Software Instrument tracks is now easier, thanks to the new Musical Typing feature—a window that lets you “play” your Mac’s keyboard by pressing keys that correspond to musical pitches. Unlike other on-screen keyboards I’ve used, this one is responsive and even lets you play chords without an annoying delay.

You can now drag multitrack Stan-dard MIDI Files into the program, where they’re split into separate tracks (bass tracks continue to import an octave too low, however). Regrettably, you still can’t export MIDI files from GarageBand, though Apple’s Logic Express and Logic Audio can open GarageBand files. As with the original GarageBand, you can export your mixed songs as AIFF files.

Other promising features that could use just a touch more refinement are GarageBand’s new track-notation view and pitch-shifting functions. The notation view errs on the side of producing legible scores at the expense of rhythmic accuracy—it missed a few triplets and dotted rhythms in my tests. And you can neither change meters and key signatures in these scores nor print the scores. Amateur musicians will appreciate the resulting scores’ clarity, but pros needing more notation capabilities should look to Logic Express, Mark of the Unicorn’s Digital Performer, or Steinberg’s Cubase.

GarageBand’s ability to shift the pitch of digital audio tracks is welcome, but once you move a track more than a major second up or down the scale, lowered tracks sound wobbly and raised tracks sound increasingly chipmunk-like as you move farther away from the original pitch.

On the other hand, Enhance Tuning—a feature that pulls slightly out-of-tune audio tracks back into tune—is a marvel. Applying a medium amount of the effect noticeably improved my less-than-spot-on vocal tracks.

Apple has released an admirable update to an already remarkable

Sounds good - I have to admit to holding off on buying a new Mac until they have settled in with the new Intel based ones as I think there will be some very special announcements in the new year and did not want to invest so heavily now only for it to be replaced very soon [msnwink]

My dream machine at the moment would be one of those quad G5 Power Mac's with 8Gb RAM and two 30" cimena displays. I was doing some video editing in Final Cut Pro HD using a dual processor Power Mac with 30" display at the Trafford Center last Saturday and it was a dream to use.

Hi John

would also hold if you were buying a power books as well as a Mac? From talking to people one of the reason Apple are changing to intel is the cooling problems in the ibook and power book as they cannot install the cooling fans that they do in the Macs.

27-11-2005, 18:38
We have been back to the Apple Store again today[msneek][msneek][msneek]

Got some add-ons for GarageBand 2, got my eldest son (who is at Uni) an Airport Express to go with his Powerbook - he is doing Audio Media Management degree at Uni and everything they do is on Macs[msnwink]

Louis has been invited back to do a session on the electric guitar, date TBA so look out for it on their web page[msnwink]

Yep - they cannot get G5 processors in the laptops as they run too hot and the laptops would be too bulky with the necessary fans. Hence the Apple laptops currently all have G4 processors.

To be honest I'd be in two minds if I wanted a PowerBook. Part of me says wait for the Intel based ones but another part of me says all the rumours are that Apple's consumer Mac's will be the first to get Intel with the Pro ones (like the PowerBook) following later on. Thus it could be mid 2006 before the Intel PowerBook's come out (or quite likely even later).

On balance, if I wanted one I'd buy now as the current range are fab and plenty fast enough for anything I'd even need it for with lots more power to spare.

Hi John

thanks for that. I have been very tempted by a powerbook and liked the spec but was unsure about waiting for the new Intel based. I think I am going to treat myself as the current range will do all I want and you could wait forever if you want to wait for the latest thing.

Good call - there is also a school of thought on the net that says steer clear of v1 of anything as it will have wrinkles which need to be ironed out (some are saying this will include v1 of any Apple Intel's). The current PowerMac is several revisions old now and tried and tested - the latest revision is the best yet too with some good improvements over the previous (very good) model.

Chris, I have a 12" Powerbook, hubby has the 15" (amoungst his collection) and my eldest has the 15" we have been really pleased with them, so if you want one I then go for it. Some rumours say that the imac and the powerbooks will be the first to have intel as they are Apples best sellers so who knows[msnwink]

Getting back to topic [msnwink][msnwink][msnwink]when we got home from the Apple Store we got 2 powerbooks, and the keyboard and the electric guitar all wired up and playing through the B & W surround speakers in the lounge and Louis was there for the rest of the day[clap][clap][clap]
