Family Tours of Tiffany Lamps

In June, the Morse Museum of American Art will begin providing free weekly family tours of The Illuminated Vision: Tiffany Lamps and Lighting, the museum’s most comprehensive exhibition ever of Tiffany lamps and lighting from its permanent collection.

These special tours for children and their parents or guardians will begin at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in June and July and last for about an hour. Geared to elementary-aged children, the tours will be led by a Morse Museum docent. The first of the nine tours will be June 3, the last July 29.

The family tours are being introduced in conjunction with a new family guide that accompanies the exhibition, and which will be available to all visitors. The docent-led tour will include hands-on activities in the galleries as well as a take-home activity. The number of children in the group is limited, and spots will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. To make a reservation, parents may call the museum at (407) 645-5311, ext. 30.

The exhibition, which continues through early 2004, features more than 40 Tiffany leaded-glass and blown-glass lamps, including examples of rare and prize-winning designs; selections made for his own home, Laurelton Hall; and lamps of virtually every sort: table or desktop, standing, hanging, and wall-mounted.

The museum's exhibitions are drawn from the collection built by Jeannette McKean (1909-1989), who founded the museum in 1942, and her husband Hugh McKean (1908-1989), director of the museum until his death. The couple assembled over a period of almost 50 years extensive holdings of Tiffany objects – what is today the world’s most comprehensive collection of the designer’ s work – along with American paintings, art pottery, and decorative arts of the late-19th and early-20th centuries.

The Morse Museum’s summer hours also begin in June. Summer hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and l p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

We have visited this museum at Winter Park several times. It's is wonderful, calm and peaceful inside-with some fantastic exhibits. Cool on a red hot day too.

What I particularly liked about it-was it was just big enough. It takes about 45mins to 1 hour to do it thoroughly-which is just about right. It then leaves lots of time for browsing the lovely shops of Park Avenue, a meal at The Briarpatch-which serves the best carrot cake anywhere a wander through the squirrel park and the boat trip around all the fantastic mansions around the lake.
