Hi
Does anyone know the duties payable for items bought back over the £145 allowance for example if i were to bring back an apple ibook what would i end up paying declaring everything?
Many thanks for any suggestions.

Chris

duty and VAT on anything over 145 pounds

If an item costs more than £145 then none of the item counts in your duty free allowance and you need to declare the whole item. You also can't 'share' the allowance around your party. But that does mean that you can bring other stuff back which is no more than £145 too!

It works out at about 22.5 percent we found when we bought some tools back. There are differing amounts of duty for different items.

If you do purchase one and you are likely to travel back and forth with it, make sure you get the receipt or Customs thing stamped with it so you dont have problems on future trips in case they assume you have bought it then.

As Blott says because you will be charged Duty on the whole value of the Apple, you will not have used your £145 Customs allowance so can bring in other items up to the £145 value.

Hi, has anymore been said or done about this tax?
My brother is going to Ohio 17th Nov and was wandering about bringing chrismas pressies back.
Will the £145 limit affect him?
Thanks

Gordon Brown made a big thing last year of announcing trying to change it to £1000 per person but it still had to be ratified by all the members of the EEC and until they agree won't/can't be changed.

There was something about this in the pre budget report last week saying that Gordon Brown welcomed the decision of the EU to double the allowance but I can't find anything anywhere else to say that he has actually done it-Any experts know???

It has been agreed to increase it to £290 but as yet it hasn't been put in place.

Best guesses are that it will be implemented early in the New Year meaning people going over for Christmas will miss out...

..damn

But the increase in air duty or the 'green tax' seems to already be passed. I put together a quote for a Virgin holiday for May 07 and it was added in the final total.

As with most things with the goverment. If its take they usually take straight away:(
If its give we usually have to wait ages:(

It's a chance you take Dikk but if they stop you for one thing you can be sure that they will go through everything to check. Not sure they would go through your smalls though!! lol
