View Full Version : 30GB Ipod?
Hi, I have ordered a 30GB Ipod from Apple for my 14 yr old son for xmas, anyone got one or have any good/bad points to say[:I]
Thanks.
Don't have a 30GB Ipod but both my daughters have Ipod Mini's and they love them. They only seem to stop using them when they are either at School or asleep. I think most things that come from or made by Apple are of the highest quality. I,m sure your son will be over the moon. By the way are you having his name engraved on the back as this is a free service offered by Apple.
Just got in from work and it has been delivered. He has had his name on the back, it is the only thing he has asked for for christmas, I am sure he will love it, he has an mp3 256mb at mo and always wearing it, I think he'll be able to download a few more songs on this new one:D;) Don't you think.
Vicky great move just got my 16 y/o one for Xmas too, she already has an original iPod but thought she would appreciate the new video version, much better value for money than the ipod nano too[msnwink]
Thanks Mac, thought you would know, if you buy one then I know it's good[msnwink][clap]
Good points :
They now play video
Have longer battery life (20 hours of music play)
Have a bigger screen
Sound is improved over previous iPods
New functions (world clocks, screen lock with PIN, stopwatch)
Bad points:
Video plays for only 3.5 hours before needing a recharge although that is more than enough 'on the go' for me
Already put the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Star Wars (original) trilogy, The Office series 1, Toy Story and my 1400+ songs on it and still have 41Gb left out of the 60Gb...[msnsmile2]
Brizzle
'Told you I was weak'
I am sure whoever gets one for X-mas will be made up. the new one is much better value for money than the old.
There is a good review of the new iPods on page 28 of Novembers MacUser magazine[msnwink]

I bought my mini ipod 4gb from the bose store in orlando along with a bose sound dock.
This little combination has replaced all my home stereo setup and due to the build and ease of use i have recently bought a mac mini.
The next purchase will be one of the video ipods!

That's a shame as we are up in the area on Sunday to take Isaac to a party and was hoping to sneak in an hour at the new Apple Store. I'll maybe try Selfridges instead but it's not the same [msnsad].

My son [12 going on 18 these days] has asked for an iPod for Xmas - should I be getting him the one with video then, and not the Nano - [ i was going for nano as it was to replace his MP3 player, and looked neat]
Also - whats this engraving milarkey -will they do that in store, or do you have to order from somewhere

It depends how much music he has - the Nano 4Gb only fits around 1000 songs on - the 2Gb model around 500 songs. If he has more than this then you would be better going for one of the Video iPod's as they are MUCH bigger in terms of storage space and will accommodate even the most ardent CD collector.
As far as I know you can only get them engraved by ordering online direct from Apple. I've never seen in-store engraving.

I would second John advice. Engraving is only done through Apple.
Personally I would go for the 30gb iPod Video, my 8 y/o has the original 5gb iPod and has managed to fill it, and for a 12 y/o it will be great to download music vidoes to go with his tracks[msnwink]
It's also better value for money[msnwink]

60Gb for me as I need the space for my video podcasts to watch on the flight back to Blighty!

Looked at them today and they are around a 1/3 slimmer than the 4th gen one and the same price as the 4th gen 20gb, looks like a good buy.
I was wondering if the BOSE sounddock is going to get the new IPOD dock. From what I recall they were none to happy with Appple bringing out the new one so quickly.
I have seen them for $299 in the US, they are £250 in UK. That was at the BOSE store.
I am not going to change my IPOD, but will look into getting a dock.
I have rumbled my Hubby and found that he is getting me an Ipod for Christmas! I've been trying to justify buying one for ages - so I'm really chuffed!
He seems to think I will need the 60GB one - whereas I think the 30GB will be fine. If I persuade him that the 30GB will be adequate - am I likely to wish I'd gone bigger later on?????

Once you get wise and start downloading video podcasts and other content that becomes available you will soon see why 60Gb is the way to go.
Enjoy. Oh, and Happy Christmas - Santa has come early!!

OMG. This little wonder is brilliant.
I owned the first generation iPod, then a silver iPod mini. But this is INCREDIBLE.
It is even smaller than I thought, and I have just downloaded 22 Gb of music and several Gigs of video podcasts to watch on the return flight - WOW
If you get a chance, try one out, then you will just have to buy.
John - this could even be worth a divorce (just kidding [msnwink][msnwink])
How much are they anyone?
I'm not interested in video, so am I better getting a mini? I don't think I'd ever get anywhere near 500 tracks either so what should I buy?
I was just going to get an MP3 player.[msnscared]
I think I will upgrade hubby's 40gb[msnwink]

LOL - Sarah has got m one for my birthday in a week's time (I know as I ordered it on the Apple website). We tried the Trafford Center and they were sold out of white 60Gb ones and I did not want a black on as all my Apple kit is white.

Go for the nano, it is so tiny. Mind you it is easy to lose as it is that small.

Did you know you can also play videos and show photos on your ipod through your TV........Use the optional iPod A/V cable to play videos and photo slideshows with music on your TV. Or combine the new Apple Remote with an optional iPod Universal Dock to control your music, videos and slideshows from across the room.[msnwink]

My 20Gb photo was only 2 months old but if I didn't get the video capable one in Florida I would have regretted it.

Okay - I went to the new Apple store in the Trafford Centre - and the only comment I would make is the 30gb one looks neater than the 60gb one which is thicker front to back - I have also been on Amazon, and read reviews that say the fronts scratch too easily - so thats not making an iota of difference - I am going to get him the 60gb one, and want to know what else he needs - someone mentioned a dock -or whatever - anything else before I hit the t'internet? [ they will arrange engraving at store, but takes a week btw]

Try and get a transleucent case or other smart protective case to prevent scratching.
The dock is an essential move unless you have one from a previous iPod.
try www.ilounge.com for accessories, also www.everythingipod.com when in the USA, separate from UK stores like www.cancomuk.com
Hi, I have brought my son the new 30gb ipod, am now looking at getting him the dock, do I need to buy cables etc for him to use it properly or do they come with it? If not the original £25 the dock was gonna cost doesn't look that good a deal after all ! He would want the dock to play music and videos through his pc, tv and stereo.
Help!!

Vicky
All the dock does is to recharge the iPod and sync with your iTunes jukebox. You can use any cable minijack to RCA, SCART etc to connect the dock to whichever device you want to connect it to.
It comes with a USB cable to connect the dock to the computer.
Hope that helps
You can use the AV cable to play back TV[msnwink]
Thanks for that, he says all he wants to connect to if he has the dock is his stereo, so what do I buy?[msnembarrased][msnsmile]
Hi, again, just looked at sons stereo, he has the three av sockets in the front, coloured ones, can he use the av for this then?[msnscared]

Yes - just the red and white ones are for the stereo signal. Yellow is for video signal.

My son is having the 60gb iPod after some deliberation and I want one a dock that he can keep near his PC and stereo to charge it and connect to PC - anyone care to help? Also does it come with some cables or do you buy them all separate? I am finding the apple store a bit vague, but want to order it online to get the engraving done. OR should I buy a dock with speakers - but not a bose one - a cheaper one would be better:D Also I want a skintight cover for it, but can't find it anywhere- Chris, you gave me a site in uk but page doesn't come up.

Sue - here is another link within the Cancom UK site -
http://ipod.cancomuk.com/products/searchresults.lasso?category=13&hideSub=1
The dock that you buy has a cable that connects via USB2 to the computer and recharges the iPod. You need USB2 for this to work.
Older docks have firewire as well.
An audio breakout cable is all that is required to connect to your stereo
OK. This is going to sound really pathetic, but I have no experience with MP3, ipods or what have you, I'm still quite excited that you can all those tracks on a little silver disk. (cd's)
I've ordered a 2gb nano. (500 songs is waaaay enough for me)
Now where does everyone get their tracks from, I'll be ripping some from my own cd collection of course but I'd like to add some new albums and even single tracks if I can. Can I buy tracks? how much are they? How much would an album be? Where are the best sites? Should I be using i-tunes? Etc?
Please enlighten an old duffer?
Thanks.[msnsmile2]

Try using iTunes - click on Music Store and you are off. You can also get a free track every Tuesday on iTunes.
You can also buy tracks online.
There are other illegal ways of getting trackc using Napster like sharing schemes
Have now sorted 60gb iPod, personalised of course :D, and dock anda case to stop scratching that got best reviews [phew] Thanks for the help guys [msnsmile2]now - anyone got an X box 360 lying about [msncry]

Just got my 60Gb Video iPod this morning and am delighted with it. I thought my old iPod Photo was the business but this is just even better [msnsmile2]
Susan: mine came with a white pouch to put it in to stop scratching. I did hear Apple had started putting these in the Nano boxes and it's good to see they are also being put in the iPod Video boxes too.
Yes I can confirm that John, I got my Nano yesterday (amazing! 2 day delivery and customised as well) and it came with a nifty soft pouch.

Another great buy - bought a Samsung Digimax U-CA5 5.0MP camera for my other daughter. Boots are selling them for £99.99 - £100 off! Sold out online but I managed to buy one from the shop.
