One of the best ways to get more from your holiday is to talk to the locals, the barmen, waiters etc when they're serving you and you will find they are often a mine of information about places to go and where not to waste your money. They are usually keen to help, if they aren't too busy (if they speak English that is) and can give you lots of valuable info, even if it's only motoring info on where to avoid traffic jams etc, by taking short cuts.
