Hi All,
Hopefully a quick question. I don't think it has been posted elsewhere[msnscared][msnscared][msnscared]
Does anyone know if you can pack a bottle of champagne in your hold luggage? My wife got it for her birthday and we thought it would be a good idea to drink it one evening on holiday, in or by the pool.
I'm pretty sure that we could take it in our hand luggage, but with it being quite heavy, we would prefer to pack it (very carefully!!) in one of the suitcases.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated. [beer]

We have a cousin who lives in California and on a trip home to see his parents packed in his hold luggage a bottle of local pink 'champagne'. When he unpacked he had a lovely set of pink clothes as the top and the wire had popped off. Mike has not brought any more champagne across and I would like to know if this is often happens with sparkling drinks or was he just unlucky.

That was my main concern, Jill!!! I'm not sure i'll risk it!!!
I bet you any amount of money, that it's me that ends up carrying the bag [msnsad][msnsad]
I've taken Champagne with me, but decided it was safer in my hand luggage :D

Yeah, I think that will be best!
I'm not really bothered about the clothes getting wet, it's the loss of champagne that would, shall we say, upset me greatly!!![msnmad][msnmad]

We took a lovely bottle of DOM to Antigua when we got married there, but as you have suggested we took it in our hand luggage!

If you think of how "careful" they are with your luggage[msnwink] you might just bring it on by hand....

Good point Paul or Marianne?!?!
I also wouldn't want them "losing" it, and having a little tipple while sorting everyone's bags out....you never know where they might end up!!
Phil
As already stated I would take it as hand luggage[msnwink]

You're more than welcome....our suitcases seem big enough to fit a baby elephant in!!![msnwink]
Not that I am in any way insinuating anything there......oh God, I think I'll shut up now!!!

Your wife, I'm guessing has already had her birthday, so it won't be the day you are drinking it that she is celebrating? So why not leave it at home, buy another bottle in the Duty Free shop and save the other one to "revive" you when you get home....go on spoil her. :)

Thanks very much Steph.......god I hope Mel doesn't read this......not that I am tight or anything [msneek][msneek]
I always get some in the duty free shop. Next time out I will have to get a bottle for my fabulous caretaker who recently had her anniversary dinner ruined by our guests [msncry]

I know. believe me iif it was mine it would have been opened on my birthday....although it is my Birthday while we are out there so maybe that's an excuse for another one!!![beer]
Just arrived back on a Virgin flight this morning after 3 glorious weeks including the wind and rain of hurricane Dennis! My husband is an excellent packer and always packs the duty free we buy on our outbound journey, in our suitcases on the return journey. After 27 years of travelling we have never had a broken bottle. One of the ways he protects the bottles is to use socks and then pack the bottles in the middle of the case, 4 Litres of spirits just unpacked and completely intact.

Thanks Bernie,
My main concern, however, is the pressure in the hold affecting the champers....I think I'll not risk it!!!
Thanks anyway!!!

Yes ordinary bottles of spirits would fare better. The atmospheric pressure is less in the hold than in the cabin area and with the high pressure inside the champers bottle it may be enough to pop the cork. I wouldn't risk it. We even have had it sometimes with sun lotion or after shave where they have seeped out a little.

Thanks everyone!!
I've decided that I'll have to let my shoulder take the strain.....I'd rather that than lose a good bottle of bubbly!!!
Thanks again everyone!![clap][clap]
Hi Phil & Mel,
We have brought champers back both from Spain and from Florida, middle of the suitcase, pack clothes all round and not had any problems, mind you we do have the solid cases, perhaps that helps.
Val
You could always just buy one in the supermarket once you are out there and save yourself a whole lot of bother[msnwink][msnwink][msnwink]

That is another good point Val,
We too have the hard sided cases with a rubber seal, that may make the case airtight!!! Oh I just don't know!!!
I had decided, and now I'm not sure!!![msnscared][msnscared][msnscared]

That sounds like the best plan Phil, and what a good excuse to indulge in two bottles of champagne.[msnwink][msnsmile2]

We took four bottles in all home last week ,two were champagne as we had 3 family celebratons on holiday . I wrapped them very carefully in bubblewrap and towels (new ones from Ross) and even though our 8 cases were searched the drink came through perfectly safe , Ive wrapped them before so I guess I have developed the knack by now, Phil drink that bottle and buy some more in Florida after all you are on your holidays, have a good one .

We take a couple of bottles every trip and it has been safe in the hold and never popped as yet!
