Moving to California

Technically shouldn't be in this thread as it's not Florida - but didn't know where else to post.
Hubby has just accepted a job offer in Fremont, California. If all goes to plan he'll be out there in October and I'll follow in the New Year.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this area re living and schooling?
We've been advised to stick to the areas South of San Francisco (Fremont, Hayward, Milpitas etc) due to morning traffic.
